For Sale: 1978 AMC Pacer in Morgantown, Pennsylvania
Every local fair midway has a booth where you plunk down a dollar
and in return get 5 or so ping pong balls that you throw into the
middle where a pyramid of fishbowls containing colored water is
stacked which contain a goldfish. Odds are good you will win as
it's meant for the younger crowd. Your prize for you to take home
is a live goldfish which may live a week, a year or even 5-10
years! No one really knows.
For consignment, as per the intro a 1978 AMC Pacer DL Wagon whose
license plate reads FSH-BWL. Pretty apropos as this car is a
Gremlin on steroids with much more interior room, but utilizing
greenhouse windows a more post mid 70's rounded design, and sports
wood panels embellishing the exterior. An all original example ripe
for the ping pong ball to land on its roof and into your
driveway!
Exterior
Believed to be original paint, this Khaki painted steel example is
also embellished with faux wood grain panels on its lowers. All
chrome is in very nice condition from the wrap- around bumpers, to
the grille and window surrounds which are extensive bordering that
greenhouse glass on all surfaces. A nice roof rack can house all
the passenger belongings, as well as a rear hatchback stowage area
for some extras you'll want to keep out of the weather. Plenty of
room for 5 inside, and a wonderfully rounded expanded bubble design
gives this car a unique look which had its fans as well as
detractors in its day. A mere 34,956 miles on this baby and it is
in overall excellent condition. Obviously garaged and well taken
care of since its purchase. 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels are on all 4
corners.
Interior
Still clinging on to the square and rectangle design the dash is
clean and simple as to its layout. It has been equipped with an
AM/FM Bluetooth radio and has beautifully wide beige broadcloth
seats that have smooth bolsters surrounding the cloth. The buckets
take on an almost clamshell design on their backs. Front buckets
and a rear bench accessible through the wide doors up front. Door
panels are clean and use vinyl frames around some insert broadcloth
for the pulls and armrests. A side view mirror toggles is seen, and
the windows are crank operated. A wide center console with dual
drink holders and a storage bin is between the wide buckets,
residing on a beige carpeted hump. Some tasteful burl grain
applique covers the dash front and compliments the beige interior.
A rear broadcloth bench stretches across the roomy back of the car
and a large storage area with a rubber liner is installed in the
back. This car has A/C, power steering and an automatic
transmission.
Drivetrain
This FSH-BWL is powered by a 258ci inline 6 cylinder which is
within a very clean and original engine bay. It has a single
2-barrel carburetor and a A904 3-speed Torqueflite automatic
transmission. The rear axle weighs in at a 2.53 ratio. All this
under a front hinged hood for easy access.
Undercarriage
Underneath reveals a factory rustproofing job for the floor pans
and rockers, and a newly resprayed fuel tank in back. A like new
exhaust system enables its way rearward, and the car uses
independent coil springs for the front, and leaf springs for the
rear. Power disc braking is upfront, and power drums for the back.
All good underneath!
Drive-Ability
She fires right up and off to the test track we went for an overall
good experience. The A/C blows cold, it handles nicely and has a
surprising amount of power given the burdens of the emission
controls that were over legislated during this period of time in
automotive history. The only thing not working was the clock.
Overall, a comfy ride with plenty of interior room and panoramic
view wherever you sit.
You'll either love it or hate it, but it's here in our Hallowed
Halls in its round mound of rebound form, greenhouse glass, and
sloped rear gate. Low miles, original paint and faux wood panels,
nice chrome and working like a charm. Have a test drive and you may
be "hooked". And bring a ping pong ball.
