Vehicle Description
In 1961, Ford introduced a third generation Thunderbird with a
completely new design reflective of the developing space age. The
"Bullet Bird", to which it was commonly referred, has a very
elegant design ending with taillight housings which were to remind
the viewer of turbines of rocket engines. This was a 4-seater
Luxury/Sports Car which was powered by a 390 cubic inch, 300
horsepower V-8 engine coupled to a 3-speed "Cruise-O-Matic"
transmission. WIth a power top which disappeared into the trunk
with a power lid, the car also was offered with "Swing-Away"
steering wheel, to facilitate ease of entry and exit, and tinted
glass as options. Available in hardtop or convertible form, the
1962 T'Birds also introduced the "Sports Roadster'' model. This
transformed the look of the car from a 4-seater to a 2-seater
Sports Car with a long, sweeping rear deck using a
beautifully-designed fiberglass tonnean cover which cover the rear
area and gave the car a fabulous look. Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire
wheels were standard on the car and added to the sporty look. The
"Sports Roadster" package was expensive and just 1,427 of these
cars were built. Although there are many roadster clones and cars
ordered with similar options, this is a Classic True Factory Sports
Roadster, confirmed by the 76B vin plate. It underwent an "Open
Checkbook Restoration" including Exterior, Interior, Chrome, Top
