Vehicle Description
No other automotive nameplate occupies the same time-tested status
as the Suburban. Getting its start all the way back in 1935, some
eleven generations later it's the longest continuously running
brand in automotive history. This 1964 Chevrolet Suburban Restomod
is a fitting homage to that extensive legacy. Combining classic
styling with some killer aesthetic and feature upgrades, it's one
seriously tasteful and unique SUV for the modern ages.
Although four generations had hit the market before this one, it
was the '60-'66 models (in particular the restyled and immensely
popular '64-'66 and up models) that fueled a sharp rise in SUV
sales that would carry on to this day. Sure, the earlier versions
sold, but this 4th generation body style really caught people's
attention and sold much better than its counterparts, setting the
stage for the following 'Action Line' Suburbans to really take off
a few years later. Look at this Suburban and you can see why. It's
got a classic ruggedness to it, sturdier and beefier than earlier
versions. Its Sinfully Cinnamon exterior (that's right, the Dupont
paint code was specifically named that to make you drool)
compliments that timeless look while at the same time giving it a
definite vitality. Some well-applied and tasteful modifications
combine with the Suburban's standard styling features to create an
SUV with a decidedly custom yet utilitarian appearance. Sure, it's
a conversation piece, but you could also see yourself behind the
wheel, taking it out on plenty of adventures. It sits just a little
lower than most, but still with plenty of clearance for its bright
Baby Moons. It's got a very distinctive look from the sides, with
only two doors for the driver and passenger, long panels and big
windows down each flank, and a standard liftgate/tailgate set-up
out back that's a favorite at car shows. Fit and finish is
extremely good, not perfect but borderline show-quality with only
miniscule imperfections to report, but nevertheless you won't
hesitate actually putting this 'Burban to work. The high-impact
orange/copper finish is brightened even further by the spacious
chrome grille, bumpers, door handles and mirrors, plus there's
awesome subtle flame work at the flanks and a little custom
pinstripe work out back that also spells out this rig's unique name
- Struggle Buggy.
Inside is a very comfortable-looking and well thought out custom
interior. Its sheer spaciousness is impressive as well - plenty of
room for cargo. The comfortable, beautifully sculpted and stitched
power leather bucket seats and middle console were all borrowed
from a later model vehicle and fit perfectly in the front cabin,
upholstered in gorgeous two-tone patterns. The rear seat was
trimmed to match, and custom side panels were built back there with
integrated cup holders, meaning even the rear passengers will feel
like royalty. Plush carpeting runs 'wall-to-wall' and come topped
with matching floormats, the ornate door panels and side panels
were upholstered to match the theme, and that custom center console
is a thing of beauty - finished with walnut woodgrain and leather
and housing cup holders, a leather-trimmed arm rest with storage
space inside, a controller for the RideTech suspension below, and a
Pioneer multi-media head unit that powers the upgraded speakers
stashed throughout the cabin. There's more of that gorgeous walnut
inside the dash, which was also painted to match the exterior of
the truck, and it houses a Vintage Air HVAC system with billet
controls and trick vents. Beautiful Classic Instruments gauges were
installed ahead of the driver and keep an eye on the monster under
the hood, while just ahead is a wood-rimmed billet steering wheel
mounted on a tilt column that ties everything together perfectly.
The headliner runs the length of the roof, upholstered in matching
two-tone leather that looks incredibly high-end, and there's even
an integrated DVD/TV player that drops down for the rear
passengers. There's plenty of storage space in the cargo area,
which was finished to match the rest of the truck, further proof
that nothing was overlooked in this build.
A Chevy 502 Ramjet V8 sits in this amply-sized and very clean
engine compartment, which comes decked out in matching orange paint
on the inner fenders and firewall that make the engine and its
components really jump out at you. Chevy valve covers and long-tube
headers look spotless at the flanks of the block, the Ram Air
set-up at the top let's everyone know this is a fuel-injected
monster that came to party, while components like the aluminum
heads, cold air intake system (with coned filter), and giant BeCool
radiator up front all turn this engine build up to 11. The big
block produces 500+ horsepower, and because it's been tuned by OBD
Diagnostics, it's ready for the street today. A modern front-runner
kit keeps all the accessories running like a top, and the plumbing
and wiring was skillfully laid out to where you can hardly see it.
A 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission from Phoenix Transmission
spins a heavy-duty 12-bolt-rear end filled with 3.42 gears, while
modern power steering and power front disc brakes make moving all
this metal quite manageable. An adjustable RideTech air-ride
suspension helps set the stance and make this big Suburban a
pleasure to drive and handle, and the Magnaflow dual exhaust system
sounds downright erotic. The stance on this 'Burban is decidedly
modern and low, and its attention-grabbing 20-inch Ridler chrome
wheels are wrapped in 245/40/20 front and 275/30/20 rear blackwall
radials.
