What we have here is a stunning, totally restored 1974 BMW 2002
tii. This BMW 2002 tii - US VIN 2781000 - was manufactured on
January 14, 1974 and delivered on March 26, 1974 to the BMW
importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original color
was Malaga, paint code 021. This is like a new car and no money was
spared in bringing it back to "like new" (or better!) condition.
The restoration of this car spanned a decade and a description of
the process follows:
The current owner acquired the car in 2009. Inspection revealed
significant rust issues and badly repaired accident damage. The car
had been hit from the rear at some point in time. Both rear quarter
panels contained lots of bondo. The trunk floor where the spare
tire mounted was rusted out. The driver's side floor near the
pedals was rusted through and the rear seating area contained
fiberglass patches. A decision was made to start with a solid
foundation.
Both rear quarter panels were removed as was the trunk floor and
the section containing the tail lights. The outer rocker panels
were cut away and the inner rocker panels were wire brushed and
then painted with POR15 to inhibit any future rust. The chassis was
striped to bear metal with soda blasting and then immediately
painted with a zinc etching primer to stop any flash rusting.
Replacement sheet metal was sourced from Walloth & Nesch in
Arnsberg, Germany. New rear quarter panels, a new trunk floor, a
new tail light section and outer rocker panels were welded in
place. During this process the car was "back dated" to replace the
factory square tail lights with "roundies." A NOS hood was located
with a collector/hoarder in CT. The body shell was now solid, rust
free and seam sealer was applied.
The suspension was removed and all parts were disassembled, sand
blasted and powder coated. All new bushings were pressed in. New
Bilstein sport shocks were mated with H&R sport springs to
upgrade the suspension. The car was then painted in the correct
Malaga using modern base coat and clear coat. A new front
windshield was sourced from BMW in Germany in November of 2012. All
the glass in the car is tinted. The rear window sports an
operational defroster. New (reproduction) Euro front turn signals
were sourced from La Jolla Independent. A reproduction Kamei
spoiler was grafted to the lower front apron. The tii brake
calipers were rebuilt. The tii clock was converted to a quartz
movement by North Hollywood Speedometer. Headlights were upgraded
to H4s. All of the bright work trim is new and sourced from Blunt
Tech. The front seats were reupholstered in the correct materials
and new door panels were acquired from Aardvarc Racing. A new
headliner was installed.
In 2020 the engine was removed from the car and rebuilt with over
$8,500.00 in new parts. (see invoices on request) Finishing touches
in 2020-2021 included five (5) new BMW alloy wheels, center caps
and chrome lug nuts wrapped in new Pirelli Cinturato CN36 tires
185/70 VR 13 (from Longstone Tyres in the UK); Classic Auto LEDs
for the rear tail lights, brake lights and reverse lights; and new
door seals. After 1,000 miles to break in the new motor the oil was
changed with 20W-50 Valvoline Racing Oil and the valves were
adjusted.
