Vehicle Description
1982 Chevrolet Corvette Collectors Edition
The 1982 Collector Edition was the first Corvette with a hatchback
rear window, foreshadowing the C4 Corvette. A special color scheme
was used inside and out and Collector Edition badges were featured.
The special, exclusive aluminum wheels were designed to look like
the optional bolt-on wheels of the 1967 model. The Collector
Edition had a ''0" in the sixth digit of the VIN rather than the
"8" found on standard Corvettes. This was the first Corvette to
sell for more than $20,000, with a base price of $22,537.59. The
Collector Edition had limited availability and 6,759 were produced
out of a 1982 total Corvette production of 25,407.
This Collector Edition automobile presents in good condition and
from our consignor's notes appears to be a 1 owner car. This garage
kept car's first service was in May of 1983 and still retains its
original window sticker, no repops here! Some paint flaws and
minimal scratching show overall, however still running strong this
example of only 6,759 produced.
Exterior
Silver Beige Metallic paint was the color of every 1982 Collector
Edition Corvette produced, and this is no exception. Dark brown
curvaceous pinstriping wraps around the passenger compartment and
highlights the fenders. A gray to black fade is seen on the
beltline door panel and makes its way to black ending in the front
quarter panel/air vent. The all fiberglass body is in good
condition. A bronze tinted glass "T" top which is removable is
scratch free and clear. A hatchback style operable window covers
the rear deck. Unique wheels, turbine style, patterned after the
1967 model's bolt on alloys, are also unique to this commemorative
edition. Crossfire injection badging is seen as well on the
exterior.
Interior
Metallic Silver/Brown "spacesuit style material" seating has
horizontal multi shade silver brown hue panels on the bucket
seating. The seats are showing a bit of crazing and fading in the
material, particularly on the lower left bolster of the driver's
seat. This fade is mimicked on the door panels, with the lower door
panels wrapped in smoked gray carpet. This same carpet in good
condition is seen throughout the cabin. An early 1980's style
rectangular dash has analog instrumentation. Another cluster of
analog gauges is seen in the center console, which includes the
floor shifter between the bucket seats. A padded 3 spoke stock
steering wheel fronts the dash and sports the crossed flags
collectors edition Corvette logo.
Drivetrain
A 350ci V8 engine is fueled by the new Cross-Fire Injection which
includes 2 throttle bodies combined with Chevrolet's computer
control system. A 700 R4 automatic transmission with higher ratio
first and second gear, as well as a fourth gear overdrive,
increased the acceleration, and improved fuel economy. The entire
engine compartment presents in good condition.
Undercarriage
Underside of the car reveals that surface rust is present, but it
is structurally sound. Power disc brakes are on all four wheels and
independent coil spring front suspension is noted along with a
fully independent rear suspension with a transverse leaf spring. We
do note some fluid blow back on the flooring from under the engine
bay.
Drive-Ability
This car was a quick starter, and smooth runner and being tilt
steering equipped it made entrance and exit a breeze for my ample
frame. It has good acceleration and handling and stop on a dime
bias free braking. The only frown that crept up during our drive
was actually post drive. The hatch release does not open the rear
glass, we didn't want to force it and risk a breakage.
A fine example of a rare commemorative edition Corvette. All
correct, and all original, an early 80's design C3 package. This
car will benefit from having its legs stretched, and a good
workout, not unlike a sleepy thoroughbred, which has many races
left in it.
