Vehicle Description
1977 MG MGB
The MGB is a two-door sports car manufactured and marketed from
1962 until 1980 by the British Motor Corporation (BMC), later the
Austin-Morris division of British Leyland, as a four-cylinder,
soft-top sports car. It was announced and its details first
published on 19 September 1962. Replacing the MGA in 1962,
production of the MGB and its variants continued until 1980.
A well maintained and upgraded car that has been garage kept during
the duration of the consignor's ownership, we give you a visually
very nice condition example of the B from 1977. Save for the large
bumpers, (which was the Brit's way of getting around the 5 MPH
law), and known as the phase 4 version, this car is a great little,
nice running, sports car.
Exterior
1977 was the height of the crash bumpers and this car sports them
in front and back, all black and ready for impact. Steel panels are
bathed in nice metallic blue paint which is in good condition with
a few chips, areas of rust bubbling under the paint and notable
dents to the front lower valance. Chrome trimmings are good and
shiny, and the rubber seals all are supple. The top on this car is
fairly tight but does show some wrinkling from being in the down
position, and rear windows are clear with no clouding. A top boot
is included as is a cockpit cover for those days when the clouds
roll in. A shout out to the British luggage rack for outings that
require an overnight stay. MG rally style wheels are on all 4
corners and show similar to Magnum 500 wheels.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we have black vinyl for the door panels.
This is showing a bit wrinkled and is peppered with black knobs and
pulls and aftermarket speakers. The buckets are in black vinyl with
a tuck and roll pattern to compliment the textured grain. The
original dash is upfront and in splendid condition. Overall, in
very nice condition with original gauges and a nice center console
in black with a cup holder inlay, an ashtray and the shift lever
with its decidedly British wood knob topper. An aftermarket
AM/FM/CD player hangs above the HVAC controls. Black carpet covers
the floors, and nice black MG logo mats cover the carpet. A peek
into the trunk and it has been completely redone and holds the
spare wheel and tire and jack assembly.
Drivetrain
Popping the bonnet, an 1800cc 4 popper is neatly tucked into the
clean engine bay. The original SU carbs and intake have been
rebuilt to work properly and are topped with K&N air filters. A
4-speed manual transmission with a newer clutch and slave cylinder
sends power back to the 3.90 geared rear axle.
Undercarriage
Nice clean and surface rust free underneath with only minor surface
rust on the suspension components. Independent coil springs and
leaf springs make up the suspension with newer bushings and newer
front disc brakes and rear drums are on. A header feeds into the
stock style exhaust system which snakes its way toward the rear of
the car. A newer fuel tank is noted at the rear of this
roadster
Drive-Ability
I squeezed in and was off to the races in a flash after a quick
start and short warmup. Here it performed nicely, especially with
the rebuilt carburetors, handled well, and was an overall
comfortable drive. All functions were working at the time of our
drive, but we did notice the horn would not honk. Thankfully my
crack decoder and partner in crime has a big mouth to warn
pedestrians in our path.
If you feel the need for some winding back road enjoyment, top-down
fun in the sun, wind in your hair motoring then this car is the one
for you. With all the upgrades and maintenance, you'll be saying
Cheerio! on your next adventure.
