The Pagoda offered here has had just three owners from new and was
in the hands of its second owner from 1978 until 2014. This U.S.
delivery SL retains both its factory hardtop and soft-tops, and it
is outfitted with the four-speed automatic transmission, as well as
air conditioning. In 2014, this SL was treated to an engine-out
restoration. After the engine and transmission were removed from
the car to be fully rebuilt, the body was completely stripped to
bare metal to be refinished in its current shade of Light Ivory.
The suspension was fully rebuilt and fitted with an all-new braking
system. Additionally, the car's chrome was all triple plated, and
an all-new exhaust was fitted. Inside, the gauges were completely
rebuilt, and the interior was completely restored using only
correct Mercedes-Benz materials.
After the restoration was completed this SL was sold to a Wisconsin
based collector who kept it in a climate controlled building with
his other cars (it would not be fair to call this place a "garage")
where it was used sparingly and given light services. In 2020, the
car was sent to a Mercedes-Benz specialty shop in Glendale, WI for
a major service and mechanical freshening. The receipt on hand
totals just about $10,000.
This is a fantastic driving 280SL that retains all of its factory
welds, original floors and has an excellent rust-free body. In
addition to its superb cosmetic presentation, it also runs and
drive beautifully.
