Hudson, the highly respected independent from Detroit, was one of the first with its innovative new Step-Down models that truly revolutionized automotive design. With design work led by Frank Spring, Hudsons Step-Down concept represented a major rethink by moving away from traditional body-on-frame construction. Instead, Hudson engineers placed the floors down low inside the chassis, a sturdy perimeter frame encircled the passenger compartment and rear wheels, and Hudson bodies were now of rigid semi-unitized construction. In addition to providing remarkable ease of entry and exit and enhanced safety, the new Hudsons were renowned for their outstanding road holding by virtue of the low center of gravity afforded by the Step-Down layout. Unveiled in December 1947, the new Hudsons made a big splash with the public and proved highly influential on the industry. Interestingly, General Motors is reputed to have purchased a number of them for evaluation, with the cars used for several years as a standard for handling and performance at the Milford Proving Grounds. Essentially unchanged for 1949, four Hudson series were offered, with the commodore at the top of the line.Continuing to benefit handsomely from an exceptionally high-quality restoration to concours standards, this 1949 Hudson Commodore Super 6 Convertible Brougham is one of just 656 examples produced for 1949. In 2009, it was invited for showing at the Meadow Brook Concours dElegance, held at the former Dodge family home, Meadow Brook Hall. As offered, this Commodore 6 is a compelling example of Hudsons well-deserved reputation for quality and elegance. Featuring outstanding fit and finish, the Commodore is finished in Ivory over a two-tone tan and brown interior. Ample power is delivered by Hudsons robust 262 CI Flathead inline 6-cylinder engine, delivering 121 factory-rated horsepower in concert with a 3-speed manual transmission. Features and amenities include an AM radio, power window lifts, and a power-operated convertible top. Additional items include a top-boot cover, spare wheel/tire, roadside jack, and lug wrench. Offered with a fresh detailing and looking fabulous throughout, this 1949 Hudson Commodore 6 Convertible Brougham is ready to enjoy and continue gracing the concours lawn.
