Collectible Motorcar of Atlanta is back again with another hitter,
a gorgeous 1989 Ford Mustang Convertible "Foxbody" in slick silver
iridium with black interior. 5.0 Mustangs like this 1989 Ford
Mustang GT convertible were arguably as big an influence on car
culture as the original small-block Chevy. Putting traditional high
performance within reach of almost everyone with a checkbook, it
shouldn't be a surprise that Ford built millions of them. However,
for those same reasons, finding one that hasn't been abused, raced,
cut up, modified, and thrashed to within an inch of its life is
definitely a challenge over 30 years later.
Fortunately, we were able to round up this GT convertible in an
appealing Silver iridium over black color combination. Silver is
especially tough to maintain, but the original finish has held up
fairly well, with only signs of use that is commensurate for the
car's 34 years of age. Today it's showing a nice gloss with few
scratches, surprisingly little orange peel, and even with those
minor imperfections, you'd be hard-pressed to find an original,
survivor-grade Foxbody in this kind of condition at this low price
point. The urethane ground effects that give the GT its unique look
are in decent condition, and both doors fit well because the body
hasn't been torqued by big horsepower and sticky tires at the
strip. All the black rubber parts that usually turn gray with age
and UV damage are still quite supple, including the window sills
and inserts on the trunk-mounted luggage rack, which was Ford's way
of disguising the CHMSL on the ragtop Mustangs. And, of course, the
"cheese grater" taillights are in great condition, the headlights
haven't turned overly cloudy, and, well, someone clearly loved this
low-mileage Mustang.
The black and vinyl interior is inviting and functional, with
supportive buckets that were some of the best on the market in
1989, and even though they show minor use that's been acquired
through the years, the interior is still very clean and inviting,
and those seats are supportive and sporty. The dash is simple, with
great factory gauges, fingertip controls for headlights, and big
rotary knobs for the A/C system. Plaid tweed cloth on the seatbacks
and bottoms was one of the few options on the GT and the
combination really pops. The center console is intact and in great
shape, as are the matching door panels, and the plush carpet ties
the whole interior together nicely. This GT offers A/C, power
windows and locks, cruise control, interval wipers, and a modern
AM/FM/CD stereo head unit in the dash that provides the tunes if
the rumble of the 5.0 isn't enough for you. And since this is a
pre-airbag car, it's got a tilt wheel, which makes a big difference
in terms of comfort. A black power top offers a glass rear window
and the surprisingly spacious trunk is in good condition
throughout.
The 5.0 liter EFI H.O. V8 under the hood is the reason the Mustang
was the pony car of choice for an entire generation. Great sound,
bulletproof performance, impressive torque, and an aftermarket that
could transform it into anything your wallet could afford. This one
is largely stock with plenty of evidence of careful maintenance
over the years, with the only obvious upgrades showing are the
upgrades to the factory A/C system and a newer battery. This pony
also carries a smooth-shifting 5 speed manual transmission, which
feeds a set of highway-friendly gears inside the original rear end
out back. Solid and clean underneath thanks to a long life spent in
Kentucky under the tutelage of 1-owners since new, this is the kind
of Mustang we all long to find and which is becoming increasingly
scarce today, and the upgraded dual exhaust system underneath has a
throaty sound that will definitely bring the crowds out. The
15-inch stock turbine wheels carry 225/60/15 radials all-around for
an awesome period look.
