1968 GTO Convertible
Car History
The Pontiac GTO is an automobile that was built by Pontiac in
generations from 1964 to 1974 model years. That first generation
GTO was the muscle car of the 1960s and 1970s era.
General Motors redesigned its A-body for 1968, with a unique
feature that was the body-color Endura front bumper. It was
designed to absorb impact without permanent deformation at low
speeds. Pontiac touted this feature heavily in advertising, showing
hammering at the bumper to no discernible effect.
We have a 1968 Pontiac GTO convertible here at Adventure Classics
that has that great look, is a real 242 Vin code that only real
ones have, has a great color combo with that red exterior paint,
red interior, and a white convertible top.
Engine & Drivetrain
It wouldn't be a '68 GTO without a big block Pontiac engine, and
ours has that covered with what we believe to be the original
numbers matching 400 cubic inch V8 engine under the hood.
It looks nice in the engine bay with its correct turquoise block,
heads, and intake, chrome factory Pontiac valve covers, and factory
black painted air cleaner assembly with the 400-4 decal on top
telling you what engine it has.
The big V8 inhales deeply with a four-barrel carburetor on top of
the intake manifold and exhales with authority with the dual
exhaust system.
Best of all, you have complete control over this V8 thanks to the
Hurst Dual-Gate automatic shifter in the console that allows you to
shift the three-speed automatic shifter in a manual mode if you so
desire.
Plus, you even have great driving features like power steering and
power disk brakes.
Interior
Our GTO has a originality to it with the great red twin front
bucket seat with matching rear seat and door panels as well as the
red interior that has all the right vintage details like the
wood-like paneling on the dash, aftermarket radio, factory and
accessory gauges, three-spoke wood Pontiac steering wheel, center
console, and black front and rear seat belts and red carpeting.
Exterior
The GTO is the father of the muscle car, and nothing showcases a
muscle car better than a driver quality red paint job like the GTO
we have with the GTO styling including the dual hood scoops, Endura
front bumper (exclusive to real-deal GTOs in '68), Dual chrome
Mirrors, and the GTO badging, with that sharp white convertible top
setting it all off.
The GTO rides on factory Pontiac 5-spoke wheels with chrome trim
rings and center cap and white sidewall tires with great sounds
coming out the dual chrome tips on each side of the rear
bumper.
Conclusion
The 1968 GTO was selected Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1968, and
you can have your GTO of this year when you purchase the one we
have here at Adventure Classics.
