Only 618 Legendary L-78 Corvette coupes were ever made. 1 owner car
almost it's entire life! I bought it from the son of the owner that
bought it in 1966. We have a vintage picture of the owner sitting
in the car. This is a real, #s matching car. It was frame off
restored by a Corvette restoration company in 2005 with the
intention of having it judged. The owner never did get around to
taking it to any Corvette shows and then he passed away. We spoke
to the restorer and he recalls a very clean body and #s matched
throughout.
What makes the L-78 legendary: This was the first big block ever
put in a Vette. It was a direct decendant from the "mystery 427"
race engine. 425 was the highest horsepower GM ever produced in a
396. GM wanted to make sure it could handle it by giving it 4 bolt
mains and substatially beefing up the bulkhead over the bearings.
They came with a forged crank with chamfered holes for extra oil.
The rear main and rod journals were larger. Heavy duty rods with
aircraft bolts were used. The heads were redesigned, it is 11:1
compression. Solid lifters were used for high revs. On top is an
aluminum high rise with a big Holley carb and a transistorized
ignition. Upgrades were also made to the handling and cooling
system. The good looking power bulge hood let people know there was
something special underneath it.
EXTERIOR: Factory color-Milano Maroon. The fit and finish is
excellent. Claimed to have all original body, the restoration shop
says it was excellent. I did not see any damage, cracks or problem
areas. The gaps around the doors and headlight doors are excellent.
The paint is gorgeous, it's polished like glass. The glass is
excellent. Weatherstrips were replaced. All the chrome and trim is
new or restored. The side pipes look cool and sound even cooler!
Dressed up sharp with reproduction gold line tires and knock off
wheels.
INTERIOR: Rare maroon color. Overall in excellent shape. The dash
pads are excellent the instrumental panel and gauges are mint. It
has correct 6500 red line tachometer, quartz movements in the
clock. Original Am-Fm radio and optional power antenna work.
Steering wheel looks new, center console is very good, original
seatbelts are good. Very good upholstery, carpet and headliner.
Visors have some wrinkles. Door panels look new. Owner's manual is
in the glovebox, jack is in proper location, it has carpeted
mats.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: Legendary 396 making 425 hp and 415 lbs of
torque. Back in 1965 this was a big deal, especially in a small
Corvette! This is vin # matching, correct casting codes and dates.
It is very authentic with it's original components. Stock valve
covers, exhaust manifolds and aluminum intake. #s matching carb is
included but not on the car. Correct fuel filter and air cleaner.
It has upper and lower ignition shielding and braided plug wires.
Correct orange overspray on the manifolds, correct deep groove
pulleys. Restored, correctly dated alternator. Correct dated
radiator, expansion tank and original thermostat housing. Correct
GM hoses and clamps. Correct spring clamp battery cables, a new
reproduction battery still in the box is included. It has optional
power brakes. Everything appears to be proper, correct and
clean.
UNDERSIDE: Looking up at the motor it is spotless. It has correct
canister type oil filter Original vin # matching Muncie 4-speed.
The driveshaft has assembly line markings. Original 4.11 posi dated
and coded to this car. The body was off the frame for a complete
restoration. The underbody was cleaned down to it's raw fiberglass,
no damage or repairs. The chassis was disassembled prepped and
painted. The suspension and steering was completely rebuilt or
replaced. It has independent suspension front and back. It was the
first year for disc brakes on a Corvette and they are at all 4
wheels. The brake system has been completely restored. Lines and
hoses were replaced, e-brake assembly is hooked up.
This is one of the all time greatest muscle cars. Stunning good
looks of the mid year coupe, a motor that makes thunder out the
pipes and a 4-speed to shift through the gears all make this one
exciting car! #s matching, rarity and quality makes this a solid
investment. It's a win-win.
I, Jay Grams, take pride in personally writing the descriptions for
virtually every car for about the last 30 years now. A significant
amount of effort goes into fact checking. What I am offering is my
professional impression of the vehicle.
Our salesmen are happy to assist with descriptions and making sure
your questions are answered. One great suggestion is letting us do
a walk around video that explains the car's condition in
detail.
**These cars are displayed in a museum. If interested in a
particular car make an appointment with a salesman to see that car.
Without an appointment there is an admission fee to enter the
showroom. If you buy a car, your admission will be refunded and you
will be given a 1 year membership.
