Vehicle Description
1969 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe
The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro appeared in Chevrolet
dealerships in September 1966 for the 1967 model year on a
brand-new rear-wheel drive GM F-body platform and was available as
a 2-door, 2 plus 2 seat, hardtop (no "B" or center pillar) or
convertible, with the choice of either a straight-six or V8 engine.
The first-generation Camaro was built through the 1969 model
year.
For consignment, an actual unmodified Camaro! Seems all the models
we get in here are all modified in some way but this 3-owner
example has never been under the knife of the go fast bug. An AACA
Driver Participation Class participant and multiple 2nd and 3rd
place wins at the Bennington car show speaks volumes for this out
of the ordinary Camaro. With its order process punchcard and
service paperwork dating back to 1987, the only deviation from the
way it sat on the dealership lot being a change from manual on the
column to manual on the floor, (there was a brief time that an
automatic transmission lived under the hump), it's safe to say this
is probably the only 6-cylinder unmolested 1969 Camaro that will
ever grace our Hallowed Halls.
Exterior
With a documented respray in the original Rallye Green over
straight rust-free panels with very well minded gaps make for a
very clean, head-turning cruiser that sports distinctly American
livery! Zoom in on the details and this Camaro continues to
impress. At the front of its body, a satin black grille hangs with
the familiar blue bowtie emblem above clean parking lamps, and
clean chrome bumper with optional bumperettes. Behind that grille,
a requisite Camaro header fronts the standard hood, which flows to
a tinted greenhouse that's dressed in polished mirrors, polished
wipers, and straight stainless trim. At the sides of that glass,
wheel frames and rocker spears, we note bright and shiny stainless
steel, with the latter running rearward to stamped in the sheet
metal quarter louvers. Traditional door handles, a driver's door
mirror and correct badging grace the sides. And at the back of the
car, a bowtie branded filler panel works with canted outward
taillights and a second chromed bumper. Signature 14" rally wheels
are wrapped with raised white letter Cooper Cobra rubber.
Interior
Continuing to follow the punch card data, we see a sea of black
nice condition vinyl. This is covering the door panels which are
wonderfully original, as are the buckets, which are high back
versions with large headrests attached. In the back is a black 2
plus 2 rear bench and has the optional fold down capability. This
rear bench is just as original and as nice as the front buckets. In
the center, well within the driver's reach is a simple chrome
handled shifter growing from the black carpeting. The dash is
original and has the factory steering wheel in front. Standard
gauges, the speedometer on the left and fuel on the right flank a
ribbed Camaro badged center panel. We also note the wiper slide to
the lower left along with a rarely seen rear window defogger
switch. To the cluster right are the chrome heater slides and
factory AM radio. Hanging under the dash is a FM frequency
converter. Original black carpeting in nice condition is on the
floors and above is a tight black vinyl headliner. This interior
bleeds originality and the only piece that may not be original is
the dash pad.
Drivetrain
Lifting the hood we are met with a well patinaed and surface rusted
engine bay. Residing within is the original 250ci inline 6 cylinder
which is fed by a freshly rebuilt 1bbl carburetor. Backing up this
mill is a Saginaw 3-speed manual transmission circa 1968 that has
been rebuilt which sends power back to a 10-bolt 3.08 geared rear
axle.
Undercarriage
Patina abounds under this last year 1st generation Camaro. Factory
undercoating is seen on the flooring and inner rockers with no
signs of repair or invasive rust. As a matter of fact, the only
rust seen is a surface coating on the unibody and suspension
components. An independent coil spring suspension is on the front
and in the rear is a monoleaf spring arrangement with new springs
noted. Drum brakes provide the whoah factor all around and a single
exhaust system is seen.
Drive-Ability
This car fired right up thanks to the rebuilt carburetor and
instantly settled into a pleasant idle. Out on the test track it
had wonderful acceleration from the inline tower of power, smooth
shifting and responsive bias free braking. A wonderfully complete
fully operational package here and even with the 6 under the hood
it still drew many looks on my multiple laps around our test
track.
All buttoned up mechanically, on the exterior, and on the interior
as well all following the order card. A beautiful color combo, all
ready to roll in style and even add a bit of excitement to your
life. Just prepare to be stopped for lots of conversation as there
aren't many unmolested 6-cylinder versions left.
