About the Fastback Mustang:

Introduced in April of 1964, the Ford Mustang is the most recognized American Muscle Car and has spurned generations of car enthusiasts. The stunning design, vast options lists and various performance options made the Mustang an instant hit and one that would withstand the test of time.

The Ford Mustang began production five months before the normal start of the 1965 production year. The early production versions are often referred to as "1964 models" but all Mustangs were advertised, VIN coded and titled by Ford as 1965 models, though minor design updates in August 1964 at the formal start of the 1965 production year contribute to tracking 1964 production data separately from 1965 data with production beginning in Dearborn, Michigan, on March 9, 1964.

The new car was introduced to the public on April 17, 1964 at the New York World's Fair. Body styles available included a 2 door hardtop and convertible, with a "2+2" fastback added to the line in September 1964. A white convertible with red interior was used as product placement when the James Bond movie Goldfinger was released 17 September 1964 at its London premiere, where Bond girl Tilly Masterson was in a spirited chase with James driving an Aston Martin DB5 in the Swiss Alps.

Favorable publicity articles appeared in 2,600 newspapers the next morning, the day the car was "officially" revealed. A four-seat car with full space for the front bucket seats and a rear bench seat was standard. A "Fastback 2+2", first manufactured on August 17, 1964, enclosed the trunk space under a sweeping exterior line similar to the second series Corvette Sting Ray and European sports cars such as the Jaguar E-Type coupe.

Several changes were made at the traditional opening of the new model year (beginning August 1964), including the addition of back-up lights on some models, the introduction of alternators to replace generators, an upgrade of the six-cylinder engine from 170 to 200 cu in with an increase from 101 to 120 hp and an upgrade of the V8 engine from 260 to 289 cu in with an increase from 164 to 210 hp. The rush into production included some unusual quirks, such as the horn ring bearing the 'Ford Falcon' logo covered by a trim ring with a 'Ford Mustang' logo. These characteristics made enough difference to warrant designation of the 121,538 early versions as "1964" Mustangs, a distinction that has endured with purists

1970 model year saw the previous 351W V8 engine options replaced with a new 351 cu in (5.8 L) Cleveland (351C) V8 in either 2V (2-venturi carburetor) or 4V (4-venturi carburetor) versions; however, some early production 1970 Mustangs had the 351W. The 351C 4V (M code) engine featured 11.0:1 compression and produced 300 bhp (224 kW; 304 PS) at 5400 rpm. This new performance engine incorporated elements learned from the Ford 385 series engine and the Boss 302, particularly the poly-angle combustion chambers with canted valves and the thin-wall casting technology.

Ford made 96 'Mustang Twister Special' cars for Ford's Kansas City District Sales Office in late 1969. The Twister Specials were Grabber Orange Mach 1s with special decals. Ford also made a few 'Sidewinders', which were built in Dearborn, shipped to Omaha, and sold in Iowa and Nebraska. They were available in Grabber Green, Grabber Blue, Calypso Coral, and Yellow. The stripes came in the trunk to be installed by dealer
