History of the Buick Riviera:
Buick entered the 1963 model year with a new vehicle to compete in
the Personal Luxury Car arena, primarily against the Ford
Thunderbird, which they would name Riviera. The name Riviera was
used in previous years as a premium trim level for the Road Master
and Super series models, providing owners more upscale features and
options. When it became its own model series in 1963, the new
cutting-edge General Motors design was certain to include an
abundance of available luxury features as well. This included a
standard high torque Nailhead V8 powerplant, as well as power
brakes and steering. A host of power accessories were made
available by choice to the buyer. Today, these stunning Rivieras
represent a desirable GM E-platform design with a front
engine/rear-wheel-drive systems when both Cadillac and Oldsmobile
were transitioning to front-wheel-drive technology.
