Vehicle Description
1980 Mercedes-Benz 450SL Roadster
"Sport Leicht" or Lightweight Sport refers to a car capable of
driving at high speed for long periods of time. 1974 was the era of
Mercedes-Benz over engineering the vehicles they built, and this
car is no exception.
For consignment, a classic sports car from 1980 and sporting the
moniker Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz brought plenty of over
engineered cars to the market that were built like panzer tanks,
and this one can be driven around, and doing so a bit sportingly.
Lovingly maintained and restored with a folder of receipts and
documentation from our consignor's and the prior owner's time of
possession translates to glckliches Autofahren!!!
Exterior
Astral Silver Metallic paint covers this car and is in very nicely
preserved condition. There is a black canvas convertible top, which
performs perfectly, and is in very good condition, allowing you to
have an open-air roadster, or a covered-up convertible. Also, there
is a body matching hardtop that comes with this car which is made
of fiberglass and a stand for the hardtop is included with the
purchase. When the hardtop is on it is definitely showing off the
"Pagoda Style." This allows for cold weather driving and provides
plenty of protection from all elements. This is also in excellent
condition. All chrome trim and brite-work is good with no signs of
dimpling or fading. Headlights are dual rounds and are very clear.
taillights are ribbed for a self-cleaning when it is driven in the
wet. Standard MB wheel covers are on all 3 corners as 1 center cap
is missing. Glatter roter Stahl!
Interior
Opening and closing the solid doors on this car yields the
sought-after thud sound upon the close. No other manufacturer can
achieve this, and what makes it unique to Mercedes Benz, is the
quality and thickness of the steel they use in these cars. Looking
inside we are met with plenty of leather coverings on the bucket
seats, door panels, and all presenting nicely, no cracks or tears,
in a striking Sienna. That same Sienna is covering the floors and
rear compartment in nicely preserved carpet. Carpeted Sienna floor
mats are above the carpet and are definitely keeping it in clean
condition. Power windows, air conditioning, power steering and
power brakes are noted. The dash, fronted by the original steering
wheel, is excellent and very clean. The factory Becker
AM/FM/Cassette radio sits in its designated position and looks just
wonderful. A new headliner is attached to the underside of the
hardtop and is bild perfekt!
Drivetrain
A 4.5 Liter V8 showing some patina but otherwise well kept, sits in
the fairly clean unrestored engine bay. Bosch Jetronic EFI provides
the fuel, and a 3-speed automatic transmission is on back and a
3.07 geared axle finishes the package well. Both the engine and the
transmission are original to this car and we note some surface rust
on the underside of the hood where the sound deadener used to
reside.
Undercarriage
This writer finds it absolutely amazing that the underside of a 42
year old 117 plus thousand mile car can look this good but it truly
does! Slight surface rust and a few repairs are seen, but solid as
a rock, and built like a German Panzer tank underneath all is well.
Power disc brakes are noted all around as is independent coil
spring suspension.
Drive-Ability
Of course, this piece of German engineering fired right up, and
handled our test track with ease. Great acceleration, great
handling, and solid braking. All mechanicals were operable save for
the power antenna, the heater only blowing in the defrost position,
and intermittent power lock operability.
1980 never looked so good with this classic. Definitely one of the
stars in the house of this make and model, in very good overall
condition, no fading, no excessive dirt, no wear on the seats, it
is simply amazing. Some service records to pour through on this
car, and with one glance it will quickly explain why it is really
that good...actually Ausgezeichnet!
