For Sale: 1976 Pontiac Firebird in Charlotte, North Carolina

Vehicle Description

Since RK Motors is one of the only full service classic car dealers in existence, a lot of folks think we build the majority of our inventory. Truth is, most cars that roll through our showroom are high quality consignments that we inspect, sort out and then pass to our clients. That said, we certainly have the ability to build cars, and sometimes we do sell cars that were built, from the ground up, right here in our RKM Performance Center. Take this awesome Trans Am for example. While it is a consigned car, it was fully stripped, fully reimagined and fully sorted by our own ASE Certified technicians. And if you've ever wanted a first class collector car that was restored by some of the best in the business, it's exactly the classic you've been patiently waiting for!

FROM SILVER TO GOLD

In comprehensive restoration that was fully documented in a two part series on our RK Motors blog, this Pontiac transformed from a solid, head turning classic into a fully sorted, headlining cruiser. The car's frame-up freshening began with selective soda blasting that was performed right here at our Charlotte facility. With a solid foundation in place, our pros supplemented new fenders, new doors and a repaired trunk jamb with a new pair of quarters. That precise profile was, after a bit of minor repair to the coupe's urethane nose, sealed in high quality Glasurit primer that was allowed several weeks to shrink. With that primer cured, hours of block sanding created super smooth surfaces that look great under rich Starlight Black two-stage that was sprayed panel by panel. That pigment, fully sanded and buffed, was supplemented with custom-mixed gold accents and a full array of Pontiac 50th Anniversary decals. And, as with all the builds our RKM Performance Center completes, we spent roughly 400 miles making sure this classic was fully sorted and ready to roll.

PURE PONTIAC

The product of a five-figure restoration that was conducted by a rogue shop, this Pontiac rolled in to our facility in bad costume with lame performance. But even though the car's appearance wasn't stellar, our initial focus was figuring out its botched mechanicals. On that note, we freed the massive 455 from its bay and sent it to our friends at Gibbons Motorsports for a complete overhaul that included a replacement Quadrajet carburetor and a hot COMP cam. With the engine out, we resealed the car's factory BorgWarner 4-speed and installed a fresh Auburn Pro Series differential. Then we bolted everything back in to a rebuilt factory suspension that was upgraded with quality Hotchkis coils and tough Hotchkis sway bars. Those bones get turned by factory power steering. Stops are provided by power-assisted calipers - Wilwood units up front and GM clamps out back. Custom exhaust roars through an X-pipe crossover and welded, dual-chamber mufflers. And at the corners, macho Honeycomb Wheels spin 225/70R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As around roughly SIXTY hours of custom-mixed paint and labor.

DELUXE DIGS

Open the doors and you'll find a clean, factory-correct interior that's both attractive and comfortable. Tall buckets wrap Deluxe vinyl skins around fresh padding. A sculpted dash hangs a full suite of restored factory telemetry behind modern, direct-fit audio and an engine-turned instrument panel that's swirled in anniversary-spec gold. Fresh carpet floats a factory console around a gold-tinged Hurst shifter. A tight headliner joins Deluxe side panels to crawl toward a meticulously restored trunk. The driver spins a requisite Formula Steering Wheel. And everything stays cool thanks to factory air conditioning and factory power windows.

This highly desirable Trans Am is a fine example of Pontiac's enduring contribution to Detroit's first golden age of performance. This is the kind of car that you can take to the show on Saturday and drive to work on a sunny Monday morning. And, with a proven drivetrain and first class restoration, this classic is set to provide one lucky owner with years of reliable cruising and tons of great memories. In the market for a timeless muscle car that just gets better with age? Here it is!
