Collectors really cannot go wrong with an Invicta from this era....
- Hagerty Hagerty continues: The Buick Invicta series was all-new
for 1959, replacing the Century as the brand's full-size
performance model. The Invicta had all of the swoopy style that
Buick could bring to bear, with fins that started at the hood
ornament and swept all the way along the car to diagonally mounted
tailfins over round taillights. The overall effect was
breathtaking, and for those who like the 1959 'fin wars' styling,
few cars are more impressive than an Invicta. Inside, the Invicta
was equipped with the same features as the basic LeSabre of the
same year, plus an electric clock, instrument panel cover, and
deluxe steering wheel. True to its performance position in the
lineup, the Invicta carried a 401-cid 'Nailhead' V-8 engine rated
at 325 horsepower. The Nailhead, so-called for its small valves, is
notable because it carries its valve covers vertically on top of
the heads, rather than canted at an angle, and the spark plugs are
located well above the exhaust ports, which makes for easy
maintenance. The Nailhead is highly prized by hot rodders, so parts
and knowledge exist to keep it going. For 1960, the Invicta's fins
became much smaller and less obtrusive, but the car was still a
sweeping design with the look of speed to it. The Invicta again
used the 325-hp Nailhead engine, mated to Buick's Twin Turbine
automatic transmission. The 1960 model year also saw the
introduction of the Invicta Custom package, which included bucket
seats and generally upgraded interior. Offered here is a 1960 Buick
Invicta Custom Convertible in light blue over blue-and-white under
a white convertible top. The car is a true survivor example of this
performance-oriented model. Showing 84,738 miles on its odometer,
this Invicta has traveled fewer than 1,400 miles per-year on
average since new and has benefitted from responsible owner care.
The refreshed exterior light-blue paint-an excellent original color
choice that nicely complements the flowing lines and varied surface
angles of the body panels including the individual headlights,
rounded fins, rear fender skirts, and sweeping cut line-retains
excellent shine across the car. There are no significant dings,
dents, or damage to any sheet metal. The fabric power-operated
convertible top is properly fitted and free of rips or tears. (To
best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be
sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the
accompanying gallery.) Chrome bumpers, windshield surrounds, and
body trim are all original and display damage-free surfaces with
minimal to no patina from age. Factory badging includes the
tri-color circular-crest grille emblem, B-u-i-c-k lettering atop
the hood, Invicta Custom front-fender model identification badge,
and a repeat of the circular crest emblem and Buick lettering on
the trunk lid. Cabin glass (notably on the wraparound windshield)
and all lighting lenses are clear and uncracked; the plastic wide,
rear window on the convertible top is also clear and unfaded.
Factory chrome styled-steel wheels are mounted with Dimension® IV
All-Season whitewall radial tires. The blue-and-white interior
color theme is a delight and perfectly complements the exterior
paint. Door trim and rear-cabin walls feature horizontal panels of
blue and white with blue carpeting on the kick panels. Seat
