The R107 (SL) series from Mercedes Benz was a long-running series of two-seat convertibles produced from 1971 through the 1989 model year with over a quarter-million vehicles manufactured during the production run. The car was offered with a variety of engine sizes over that time span, with both inline six-cylinder powerplants and V8 engines being available in displacements from 3.0 to 5.6 liters.
The sporty two-seater quickly gained popularity all over the world but proved to gain acceptance in the United States luxury sports car market. US sales accounted for approximately two-thirds of the R107 series sales, nearly 160,000 units in total.
The car was a hit with the entertainment industry, as SL models were featured in many highly rated televisions shows and feature films from the 1970’s through the 1990’s. Sold with a convertible top as standard equipment, many buyers opted for the optional removeable hardtop making the car an all-season performer.
The SL series featured unitized body construction with a 96.9-inch wheelbase. The 3.8 liter V8 powerplant displacing 155 horsepower and generating 196 lb/ft or torque was backed with either a four-speed manual transmission or a five-speed manual transmission. The car had a dry weight of 3,460 pounds, giving it a reasonable power-to-weight ratio for a luxury sports car from that time period.
The 380SL was introduced to North America in the 1981 model year and produced through the 1985 model year. Production figures by model are not available but the 380 series was the highest displacement in the R107 lineup until the 560 was introduced in the 1986 model year.

These are old vehicles and it is very common for them to require certain maintenance and upkeep for them to be operational. In many cases issues with leaks may develop when being driven after a long period of not being used. This is common, as classic cars at some point will leak fluids. For this reason, we do not encourage buyers to attempt driving their purchase home as we cannot guarantee functional reliability of these vehicles. We strongly encourage prospective buyers to be sure they are comfortable with these issues before purchasing a classic car.
