Vehicle Description
1953 Mercury Monterey
The Monterey, named after Monterey Bay, was Mercury's flagship
mid-range full size vehicle which replaced the Mercury Eight from
previous years. It was the only nameplate for Mercury to be
continuously produced throughout the 60's. They were produced for
over 22 years before a brief hiatus after which the name was
revived for a short time in the early 2000s. They were first
introduced in 1952 making the 1953 Monterey you see here a very
early example of one of these cars. The car is in great shape and
has been kept mostly original except for a few upgrades to make it
more road friendly. The body is in good shape and rust free. It is
painted a Yosemite Yellow with Black top and based on condition we
suspect it has been repainted at some point in its past. The
original chrome and stainless is all nicely mounted in place and
has a good shine. The glass is in good condition as well. The car
rides on its original painted wheels with new flipper hubcaps. It
also comes with its original rare hubcaps which are in mint
condition. They are not in place in our pictures but the painted to
match fender skirts also come with the car. The 15 inch wide
whitewall tires have plenty of tread left and look perfect on cars
of this vintage.
The motor is its original 255 ci Flathead V8 that starts up and
runs great. The car has been upgraded to 12 volt and the oil filter
system has also been redone. The motor runs strong with no smoking
or heating issues. It has new headers with custom dual exhaust and
the fuel pump has also been converted to electric. All of those
little upgrades result in a smooth running classic with a vintage
look but more reliability. The transmission is a 3 speed manual
that moves through the gears smoothly. In late 2021 the radiator
was flushed out and new anti freeze put in. The brakes and
suspension is all the stock set up and are working properly.
The interior is finished out in a two tone Black and White. It has
a split bench seat and the upholstery is all in good condition. The
headliner, carpet, and door panels are in good shape as well. The
dash has a stock layout with its original style gauges, knobs,
switches, etc. The car just got a new heater blower motor but still
needs a heater core to get it working correctly. The trunk is
nicely carpeted and houses the original spare.
The car also comes with a car cover and has always been garage
kept. It is being offered up at a very reasonable asking price.
