Vehicle Description
Collectible Motor Car of Atlanta has done it again presenting this
spectacular 1971 Mercedes Benz 280SL. Mercedes-Benz introduced the
280SL less than a year after the 250SL arrived on the scene, and
closed out the "Pagoda" SL line in 1971. The 280 was very similar,
to its predecessor, using clean, elegant lines, intelligent
placement of the wheels in proportion to the rest of the design,
and a tall, "Pagoda" optional removable hard top that allowed for
ease of ingress and egress.
Like the other W113 cars, the 280 utilized a monocoque chassis,
with front suspension courtesy of coils and wishbones, while the
rear incorporated a single-pivot swing axle and transverse springs
set up to compensate for camber. Four-wheel discs provide braking
power.
The engine is a smooth 2.8-liter, overhead-cam, M130 inline-6.
Bosch fuel injection was incorporated as well, and horsepower on
the sport tourer is rated at 180 - a fair bit more than the 230 and
250 had access to. Torque is also higher at 177 ft-lb. A 4-speed
manual transmission was standard, though the new 4-speed automatic
transmission, as this one is equipped, was optional.
Cabin refinement is high, with acres of comfortable, plush,
supportive seats, big, readable VDO gauges, and a quality of
craftsmanship throughout. The interior climate is controlled by the
ice-cold Figiking air conditioning. All the interior lights have
been addressed and are in proper working order (dash lights, glove
box/ map light, radio, clock, etc.). Safety features of this
vintage includes an energy-absorbing steering column (equipped with
a superb Nardi steering wheel) and shoulder/ lap Kangol seatbelts,
while side marker lights are the biggest external visual difference
between the 250 and 280. This very fine example is finished with a
quality repaint in stunning Dark Maroon Burgundy with matching
Pagoda hardtop (with rear window defogger) as well as Brown soft
top. The interior boasts Cognac MB-Tex interior (including original
sun visors), satisfying even the most careful collector eye. The SL
comes with a new OEM locking gas cap, 2 sets of original keys,
original Mercedes tool kit and pouch, original owner's manual,
literature and brochure along with original carry pouch. A final
detail to note would be the recent tires having 99% tread wear
remaining.
280SL's of this caliber are highly desirable and not on the market
very often. Inquire today.
