One thing that was clear by the executives at VW was that the body style was set and any future variations would not alter the iconic Beetle look and feel. So when engineers wanted a little freshen up after 4+ years on the market they crammed a 1.8 Turbo 4cyl from Audi and a 6spd manual and created an instant classic. Producing 180HP and lots of extras this became the VW that everyone wanted but few could afford or find on the market.
