No American car of the era could match the new Mercedes’ mix of technology and quality. Fully independent coil-spring suspension and four-wheel disc brakes meant that ride and handling with the long-wheelbase chassis were thoroughly modern. Still, unlike a car of the 21st century, the look was completely distinctive and completely Mercedes-Benz, or “fabulously handsome,” as Road & Track called it.
Sumptuous accommodations for four included a fully lined top in the traditional stacked German cabriolet manner. The framework of the convertible top was concealed from view by a complete interior headliner; each top required more than 16 hours of hand labor. On average, only 13 cars per week were built, with Mercedes-Benz producing just 1,232 examples between 1969 and 1971, and of those, only 200 were produced with the desirable low-grille. This was Mercedes-Benz’s final truly hand-built automobile.
