German Hammer with reportedly fewer than 20,000 miles on it? Yes,
we have one here at MotoeXotica Classic Cars, a 1999 Mercedes-Benz
C 43 AMG Sedan. The C43 was the first AMG car to be completely
assembled at the Mercedes factory after the acquisition of AMG by
Daimler-Benz in 1998. The C43 was the first C-Class to be equipped
with a Mercedes-Benz V-8 engine. This example was made in March
1999 in Germany and is dressed in Black (code DB040) and its paint
and carbon fiber trim are overall excellent condition. The car?s
bodywork is straight and solid, including those doors that close
with a reassuring bank vault-like solidity. On the windshield is
Mercedes? monowiper, a single arcing blade. The engine bay is tidy,
the trunk is in very good order, the battery is clean and the
body-color bumpers fit tightly to the body and look great. There
are AMG exhaust tips and a six-disc compact disc changer is on the
right side of the trunk floor. This Benz rolls on Michelin Pilot
Sport 4 radials, size 225/45ZR17 in front and 245/40ZR17 in back.
Each tire is mounted on a polished AMG five-star wheel. The wheels
are in excellent order and the tires are in very good shape. The
C43 is powered by a tuned version of an aluminum 4.3-liter V-8
engine, (code M113) originally found on the W210 E 430 model. After
modifications, this engine delivers 302 horsepower and 302 lbs?ft
of torque. According to Mercedes-Benz, the car can reach 155.5 mph,
with electronic speed limitation and 168 mph without. The
transmission is an AMG-modified version of the 5G-Tronic five-speed
automatic gearbox found on 1998?2000 R129 SL 500 (code 722.6). Main
modifications were made to achieve a crisper and better adapted
gearbox to higher rpm upshifts. Also, the braking system has been
taken from the W210 E 55 AMG. Driver convenience features include
electronic climate control, power rack-and-pinion steering, power
four-wheel disc brakes, cruise control, power windows, power locks,
power sideview mirrors, power front seats, tilt steering column,
sunroof, foglights, remote trunk lid release, heated front seats
and headlight wipers. Safety equipment includes dual front airbags,
front side airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), integrated side-impact
protection, traction control, brake assist system (BAS), Xenon
headlights and a limited-slip differential. Inside, the car?s
Anthracite ?Tuxedo? leather interior (code 221) is Teutonically
sparse yet luxurious. The leather front buckets and rear bench
seats are in excellent order, as is the matching carpet. The
headliner is neutral, which helps contrast with the carpeting and
upholstery. A four-spoke steering wheel faces the driver. The
instrumental panel and the inner door liners are in excellent
order, as is the center console. There AMG gauges, black numerals
and hashmarks on white faces, plus digital odometer, trip odometer,
clock and thermometer. The doors and center console are trimmed in
burled wood for added warmth. There?s a gated shift lever and a
factory infotainment system with CD player. The overall body of the
C43 AMG estate version has many similarities with the C36 AMG,
except for the front and rear bumpers as well as the side body,
both of which were re-designed. The black engine cover with the
chrome AMG and Mercedes-Benz star logos is also very typical from
that period in this market segment. Both C models were created to
counter BMW?s formidable M5 mid-size sedan. W202s in North America
included the C220, C280 and the AMG variants. It was launched in
the U.S. in November 1993, and unlike models in Europe, featured a
third brake light, no specific trim levels, and side markers
integrated into the front-turn signals. The U.S. models also did
not have the hazard triangle, which is regularly located in the
trunk in case of a road emergency. The AMG variants also did not
ride as low (about an inch higher) as the Euro spec models. The top
speed was also electronically limited for non-AMG variants to 130
mph in the US due to tire speed restrictions. The C43 AMG was able
to go 155 mph in the U.S. just like the Euro spec models.
Competition to this Mercedes in 1999 included BMW?s M5, Cadillac?s
Seville STS, Jaguar?s XJR, Lincoln?s LS, Mitsubishi?s Galant VR-4,
Nissan?s Maxima GLE, Oldsmobile?s Aurora and Toyota?s Camry TRD.
