Vehicle Description
1986 Chevrolet El Camino
Rumor has it that Mattel's Elliot Handler (the 'el' in Mattel),
spotted designer Harry Bradley's El Camino in the Mattel HQ parking
lot and commented, "Those are some hot wheels," coining the new
name for Mattel's line of toy cars, Hot Wheels. In fact, Elliot was
so impressed by Bradley's custom El Camino, he insisted that Mattel
use it as a model for the first line of Hot Wheels toy cars. And
the rest as they say is history.
All starting from an Australian farm wife wanting a vehicle she
could use during the week on the farm and then drive it to church
on a Sunday, the concept of a car with a truck bed was born. The
Chevrolet El Camino (literally translated to "The Way") is in our
massive facility and standing out as a nice example. Dressed in
gray, a canvas tonneau cover, and highly polished wheels, it's a
worker during the week, and Churcher during the weekend, that
Australian woman would be proud!
Exterior
Showing a respray of the original gray and done beautifully, all
steel panels are straight and minding their gaps throughout. Some
nice chrome trimmings for the grille, wheel well openings, belt
line trim edging, windows and top of rear bed sides add a touch of
class. So does the black canvas tonneau cover and black pin
striping. Another nice feature is the triangular extra glass just
before the B pillar. This adds what looks like extra space to the
passenger compartment, but in reality, it's just a cool illusion.
The long straight bed is lined with a large heavy duty rubber mat
with the sides showing no dings or dents, and all glass on this car
is clear and like new. 17" highly polished 5 spoke wheels Ridler
wheels are on and wrapped by like new staggered blackwall rubber.
As a bonus the consignor is including the original wheels and extra
center caps for the 17" wheels.
Interior
Much like showroom, extremely clean surfaces starting with the
swing of the doors revealing the door panels utilizing smooth
padded vinyl in gray, molded plastic in excellent condition which
houses the door pull, and side view mirror joystick. Slipping
inside we are greeted with mid 1980's square and rectangle design
for the dash, all functioning controls, and nicely set up for ease
of operation. We note the full gauge package with factory
tachometer as well as other engine vital monitoring gauges. Cruise
control is noted, and A/C with an AM/FM/CD player is fitting neatly
into a square panel. Nice fade free crushed velour broadcloth with
some tuck and roll inserts and smooth gray vinyl bolsters form up
the seating in bucket form, and a large central console fills the
space between the seats housing a padded top storage compartment,
automatic shifter, and custom cup holder. Gray carpet floods the
floors and is very nice with only minor soiling, as is the tight
gray fuzzy headliner above.
Drivetrain
A peek under the hood reveals a nicely detailed and like new engine
bay. Within its confines sits a 4.3 liter V6 with EFI, a GM 200R4 4
speed automatic transmission with a consignor stated shift kit, and
a 10 bolt rear with 2.41 gears. Entire drivetrain is from the
factory in this car/truck, all original, and all very clean.
Undercarriage
Looking nice underneath, no rust, strong structure, and mechanicals
are good as well. Speaking of which, we note independent coil
springs upfront, and 4 link with coil springs for the back. Power
disc brakes are on the front and power drums on the rear. A single
exhaust system with a stock style muffler is on as well.
Drive-ability
A quick starter, nice interior and a good runner. Fine handling,
straight panic braking, and super acceleration. All surrounded by
materials in good condition, and fully
functioning...well...functions. Also, a smooth cruiser.
Made in Mexico, this car truck is in good condition, runs smoothly,
and is looking just fab! A worker and a classy ride to go out, only
need one vehicle with this one!
