Period Chevy Nova SS magazine advertisement headline The Nova SS
advertising copy hailed: Up and at 'em! ... a throbbing engine
note... this one's no imitation... a standard 300-hp V8... special
suspension... an extra tough clutch... 7 wide wheels... power disc
brakes... Chevy Nova SS... the car that woke up swinging. Clearly,
the folks at Chevrolet were celebrating the way folks had been
making their more basic Novas into performance sleepers with this
new SS that came from the factory ready to perform from day one.
Offered here is perhaps the ultimate Awakened Sleeper, a
ready-to-race 1973 Chevy Nova SS in custom blue with black stripes
over black-and-blue. Showing 7,907 miles currently, the car has
been fully drag-race-prepared. This Super Sport's been
professionally restored to a very high standard, including a new
383-cubic-inch stroker V8 and a host of race-related parts and
component upgrades. This is a Seventies SS, properly prepared and
ready for show... and definitely, for go. The professional quality
of the metallic medium-blue exterior paint application is evident
in the even and complete application (including door sills, door
frames, and underside of the hood and trunk), virtually perfect
gloss, and deeply reflective color. The black stripes are perfectly
applied to the hood, rear deck, and body sides, even extending into
the door sills and under the hood. Bumpers are painted in the body
color. The hood scoop feeding air to the two 4-barrel carburetors
is removable, and the hood is held down with chrome hood pins. In
their time, Novas were often campaigned as sleepers: this one is
fully awakened. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim
finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in
the accompanying gallery.) Badging includes SS emblems on all sides
and the intentionally misleading 350 engine-identification badges
on the front fenders. Chrome trim surrounding the SS blackout
grille and the chrome side mirror and door handles is in well-kept
condition with minor patina; window trim is blacked out. Very
darkly tinted cabin glass is clear and free of cracks as are
lighting lenses. Staggered-size, matching Weld Racing® chrome,
dish-style wheels are mounted with Hankook® Optimo H724 blackwall
tires in front and Mickey Thompson® drag-racing slicks in back. So
much for the sleeper look. Inside, front, racing-bucket seats are
upholstered in black leather with exterior-color-matching blue
quilted-pattern inserts. Racing belts are mounted. Rear seats have
been removed and a full padded roll cage, battery (with voltage
meter), and fuel cell have been mounted. Black carpeting covers
cabin floors extending to the rear of the vehicle. Black stock door
trim includes woodgrain trim. A Grant® GT steering wheel in black
and blue frames the horizontal 120-mph speedometer, with an
AutoMeter® SportComp tachometer (with adjustable redline) mounted
on the left-hand side of the steering column. Additional AutoMeter
gauges on brushed-metal panels have been added to the modified
dashboard to monitor oil pressure and coolant temperature. A sole
Nova emblem faces the front passenger and a driver-advisory sticker
is affixed on the otherwise unadorned black dash. The shift lever
for the 4-speed manual transmission (linked to the 4:!0 rear end)
is located on the console. (Please view the close-up photography in
