advertisement headline Hagerty | Media provides a bit of Jeep
history: The Jeep CJ-5 is a product of Willys-Overland refining the
original World War II 'jeep.' Starting with the CJ-2A in 1945,
subsequent improved models were the CJ-3A and CJ-3B before the
introduction of the CJ-5 in 1955. Akin to the original jeep, the
CJ-5 was a civilian variant of their M-38A1 military Jeep, which
went into production in 1952. The only engine initially available
was the 'Hurricane' F-head 4-cylinder that was based on the
original engine used in the WWII jeeps. A year later, Willys added
a longer sibling, the CJ-6 (once again, a byproduct of a military
jeep, the M-170 ambulance). Also from 1956 on, all CJs were
all-wheel drive. In 1965, optional engines were added to the
platform, with a 155-horsepower, 255-cid V-6 and the rarely
equipped 129-cid Perkins 4-cylinder diesel appearing on order
sheets. Offered here is a 1962 Jeep CJ5 fully restored in medium
metallic blue over black. Showing 48,512 miles on its odometer, the
CJ5 has traveled fewer than 850 miles per-year on average since
new. The interior and exterior metallic-blue finish was
professionally applied and the smooth, even finish and excellent
overall gloss are the result. This color was never applied at the
factory back in 1962, but it suits the C5 perfectly. (To best
assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure
to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying
gallery.) The bodywork shows no dents, dings, or other damage, The
front bumper is painted matte-black while the rear bumper has been
refashioned from wood. Aluminum entry-assist steps have been added
on both sides. The spare tire is located on the right-rear
quarter-panel. Windshield glass and all lighting lenses are clear
and free of cracks. Chrome side mirrors are in place. Chrome
15-inch aftermarket wheels are mounted with Tempra®235/75
all-season road tires. Inside, front buckets and removable rear
bench seat are freshly reupholstered in horizontally pleated black
vinyl. Floors, rear fenders, and the tailgate are covered in black
loop-pile carpeting. The standard black 3-spoke steering wheel
frames the flat, utilitarian Jeep dashboard. A large center-mounted
single-digit speedometer is joined by a smaller AutoMeter®
tachometer and AutoGage® instruments on the modified dash to
monitor oil pressure, coolant temperature, and alternator output.
The shift lever for the 3-speed manual transmission is mounted on
the floor alongside the 4WD transfer case selector lever; both are
topped with wood knobs and the dashboard also features wood
enhancements. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery
to assess the condition of the CJ's various interior surfaces.)
Under the hood, the 2.2-liter inline 4-cylinder commands a very
clean, complete, and well-ordered engine bay. An oooga horn is
mounted. Viewed from below, the the chassis and lower body are
similarly clean and complete. The dual exhaust with chrome tips
emanating from a single muffler is a visual focal point. (To best
evaluate the condition of undercarriage surfaces, please review the
gallery photos shot from below.) The Jeep's factory-mounted data
plate remains in place and the original maintenance plan booklet
for the vehicle is included in the sale. While the more than 150
