Class by Itself €" Motor Trend, October 2004 Motor Trend raved:
After our extensive review of an early production SSR for our Sport
Truck of the Year competition, we said that if we scored charisma,
Chevy's Super Sport Roadster would blow away the competition. After
driving this mid-year production model equipped with a few extras,
we haven't changed our opinion. It has such style and class that it
always draws a crowd wherever you drive it. So, if you decide to
buy one, be ready to share it with the neighborhood. As cool as all
the styling and brilliant design details of the SSR are, the
heartbeat of any hot rod/sport truck is its engine and driveline.
The SSR is motivated by a 300hp all-aluminum Vortec V-8 powerplant
that puts power to the rear wheels through a 4L60-E electronically
controlled four-speed automatic transmission. It pushes the SSR
through the quarter-mile in 15.36 seconds at 91.35 mph and reaches
60 mph in just less than 7.5 seconds.' Offered here is a
yellow-on-black 2004 SSR that has been kept in very
well-maintained, near showroom-new-looking condition. Showing
89,650 miles on its odometer, or fewer than 5,300 miles per-year,
on average since new, this is a very low-mileage example by the
Carfax 15,000 mile-per-year standard. As its Carfax also
demonstrates, this SSR has received regular maintenance over its
life. Its only hiccup was a minor-damage incident five years ago,
long since fully repaired with no sign of repair or damage
remaining. The condition of the exterior non-metallic yellow paint
is excellent across all body panels; the gloss is uniform and free
of wear or damage. Yellow was an outstanding choice to showcase the
curvaceous design of this unique offering from Chevrolet; the color
attracts onlookers like bees to honey. There is no sign of wear or
imperfections on the convertible-top panels, or any other body
panel for that matter. The roof operates perfectly for top-drown
driving in this one-of-a-kind convertible-sport-truck. (To best
assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure
to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying
gallery.) The tasteful trim piece on the grille and the
brushed-metal-finish, half-moon door handles add lovely design
touches. Lighting lenses-including on the rear LED lights-are clear
and free of damage; cabin glass is also pristine. Factory chrome
split-spoke 20-inch wheels (unique to the SSR), with bowtie-emblem
center caps, are mounted with a mixed set of tires, Laufenn® in
front and Toyo® Proxes in the rear. Inside, the well-designed black
interior theme is accented with brushed metal trim on the dash,
steering wheel, doors, and console. Black cabin carpeting is
protected with all-weather rubber mats. Leather upholstery has been
very well maintained and shows only light creasing, but no rips or
tears. The driver-oriented analog instruments are fronted by the
sport-design steering wheel with thumb controls. In the center-dash
position, an aftermarket infotainment system screen is in place
above three brushed-metal knobs controlling the HVAC. Farthest
forward on the console are three engine-monitoring gauges, with the
shift lever for the automatic transmission and surrounding
brushed-metal trim, just behind. (Please view the close-up
photography in the gallery to assess the excellent condition of the
SSR's interior surfaces.) The carpeted rear storage area with wood
