Vehicle Description
1940 Ford Deluxe
Excerpt from the Foreword section of the original owner's manual...
"The fact that you are the owner of a new Ford car is, in itself,
an indication that you have a keen appreciation of a well-designed,
carefully manufactured automobile. It has been designed to perform
faithfully for many thousands of miles, and Ford Motor Company has
the utmost confidence that this car will fulfill your
expectations." I think this wraps it up nicely!
For consignment this beautiful iconic design Ford Deluxe. Good
condition all around with some minor faults but retaining all its
original charm and styling. Presenting very nicely, and a great
driver, I can attest to this from firsthand experience.
Exterior
Fire engine red paint covers this all-steel car with gaps that are
good. A few faults to note, mainly paint loss under the fuel filler
and some bubbling, cracks and crazing but still very presentable.
The chrome is very good, from the guarded front bumper, swept back
grille and teardrop headlight bezels to the stainless side spears,
inverted sergeant stripe taillights and also guarded rear bumper.
All badging is present and accounted for and looks just fab. Wheel
covers are chrome dished style over red painted steel wheels and
display with FORD DELUXE.
Interior
Clean tan cloth abounds on the interior. Cloth door panels present
with horizontal stitching along with bakelite bezels for the chrome
door handle and window crank. A red metal dash with tan
highlighting in art Nouveau style, houses the instruments, some
chrome trim, and mirror where a clock did once reside. This is
fronted by an original contrasting black steering wheel. Similar
maroon bakelite knobs can be seen throughout the dash and attached
to the column. Noted is a radio delete plate atop the dash in shiny
chrome. Clean tan carpeting floods the floors and above is a tight
slightly soiled tan broadcloth headliner.
Drivetrain
Under the long bulbous hood is a patina riddled 221ci Flathead V8.
It has a 2-barrel carburetor atop and the requisite oil bath air
cleaner assembly. A 3-speed manual transmission is on back and
sends power to a 3.78 geared rear axle.
Undercarriage
Surface rust abounds underneath with the exception of the black
painted floors and running boards. Meanwhile, sections of the frame
and integral X-frame are showing invasive rust. Transverse leaf
spring suspension along with drum brakes are seen both front and
back. A single stock style exhaust system is on to complete our
tour down under.
Drive-Ability
As I swung the door to the passenger's side, my partner in crash
testing and test driving took the wheel, and we had a great convo
about these old Fords. She ran like a top after a spritz of
starting fluid, had good power, bias free braking on the panic
stopping, and overall was a pleasure to drive.
Flaws and faults aside, this is a completely drivable car that
still has the looks necessary to draw all the ooohhs and ahhhs from
passersby. Nouveau styling, tasteful chrome, and a clean interior
all work together to make for one deluxe Deluxe. Currently residing
in our Hallowed South mallway and ready to fulfill your
expectations!
