best kept secret: the Dodge Ramcharger. -Motor Trend, January 2019
The Motor Trend writers continued: Existing deep in the shadow of
the Bronco and the Blazer even since new, the Ramcharger gets
passed over for big-money builds and restorations, leaving the
majority of surviving examples beaten and abused. It's a shame,
considering these two-doors are handsome brutes with a similar
brawny, let-your-chest-hair-flow vibe that makes the Bronco and K5
Blazer so popular. The... SUV gave outdoorsy Mopar fans exactly
what they sought: rugged individuality. The Ramcharger was
ostensibly a base-model Dodge pickup that had nine inches chopped
from the wheelbase and with the bulkhead and roof lopped off the
cab. The truck came standard without a roof, but the vast majority
were fitted with a heavy, drop-on, optional steel top with a
flip-up fiberglass rear window; a vinyl soft top was also offered.
The bed area of the interior could be covered in rubber or carpet.
Offered here is a 1985 Dodge Ramcharger AW100, Prospector premium
trim level, in bronze and black over tan. The SUV's odometer reads
12,202 miles. This original Arkansas Ramcharger Prospector was a
late-in-the-model-run example with updated styling and a
non-removable steel roof. The Ramcharger's exterior two-tone paint
paint has been refreshed and shows excellent gloss and uniform,
professional application. Chrome front bumpers are in excellent
condition, as are the chrome front grille, door handles, and
West-Coast style, chrome side mirrors. The rear, silver-painted
bumper shows signs of use. The brushed-metal trim panel on the
tailgate is in very good condition. Factory badging-including Dodge
Ram on the tailgate, Ram Charger emblems on the front fenders, ram
statuette hood ornament, and Dodge badge on the hood-is all
correctly in place. Cabin glass (including dark-tinted glass in the
cargo area) and lighting lenses are clear and undamaged. Eagle®
8-spoke, 17-inch, chrome wheels are mounted with
raised-white-letter Kenda® Klever RT 35x12.50 LT tires. The Ram has
a lift kit installed. The SUV's premium woodgrain-trimmed interior
retains a virtually stock look throughout. Most interior
surfaces-door trim, seat upholstery, dashboard and more-display
excellent surface condition. The tan carpeting shows some wear and
the driver's seat cushion has a small tear. Premium door trim
incorporates woodgrain, vinyl, and carpet, all appearing virtually
as-new. Tan angled-tweed-look fabric upholstery covers the
fold-forward, front high-back buckets (separated by a deep,
lockable storage compartment) and removable rear bench seat with
armrests. The 3-spoke factory black steering wheel frames three
large instrument openings on the woodgrain-trimmed dashboard.
Instrument graphic markings are crisp. To the right, slide-lever
heat-and-air-conditioning controls and the factory
Chrysler-branded, digital AM-FM stereo radio are located. The shift
lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the shift column
while the transfer-case 4WD selector is floor-mounted. The truck is
also equipped with power steering and power front disc brakes.
(Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to best assess
the condition of the Ramcharger's interior surfaces.) Under the
hood, the 5.2-liter (318-cubic-inch) Chrysler V8 retains its
original finish, unadorned look, and a fair a
