best possible job in coming up with a perfectly suited muscle car
that fits street and racing conditions without great amounts of

January 1970 Hagerty | Media provides more '70 Mustang background
and history: The 1969 range was such a huge change for the Mustang
that 1970 alterations were relatively minor. The four headlights
were reduced to two seven-inch lights in the wider grille, with a
dummy intake where the outer lights had been. Fake intakes on the
rear fenders of the fastbacks were deleted and the tail panel
flattened, instead of concave. Henry Ford fired Bunkie Knudsen in
August, either because he wanted to move away from muscle cars or
because Knudsen had been too successful in pushing the expanded
performance range. In any event, sales dropped 100,000 units,
largely because of competition from Chrysler in the form of the new
Challenger and 'Cuda as well as the redesigned Firebird and Camaro
from GM. Total output for the year was 190,727 Mustangs, with
82,569 hardtops, 13,581 Grande hardtops, 45,934 fastbacks, 40,970
Mach 1s and only 7,673 convertibles. Offered here is one of those
7,673 1970 convertibles. This Texas-owned metallic
red-over-black-under-a-black fabric-top Mustang has been refreshed
and respectfully upgraded. The odometer currently shows 68,276
miles, fewer than 1,350 miles per-year on average since new. The
exterior metallic-red finish is the result of a professional
respray; the surface is smooth, the gloss very high overall, with
no damage to paint or sheet metal. The paintwork properly included
the trunk interior, door sills and jambs, and under-hood surfaces.

accompanying gallery.) The soft top fits perfectly and shows no
tears, rips, or other flaws. Chrome bumpers, grille and windshield
trim, and rear fascia trim all display excellent finishes; the
patterned rear panel surrounding the fuel filler has been painted
in the body color for a distinctive look. Cabin glass and all
lighting lenses are clear and uncracked; the single-headlight look
is a desirable and distinctive feature. Badging is limited to the
Mustang-logo emblem in the black front grille and the same logo on
the rear fuel-filler cap. Factory-original, 15-inch, styled steel
wheels with Mustang logo center caps are mounted with Sentury®
Touring 205/65 blackwall tires. The black interior includes
horizontal-pattern vinyl door trim, horizontal-pattern vinyl
upholstery on the front bucket seats, vertical-pattern vinyl on the
rear bench seat, and black cabin carpeting (with black protective
carpet mats) throughout. A black vinyl boot covers the convertible
top when stored. All these surfaces show virtually no significant
wear and absolutely no damage. A leather-rimmed, 3-spoke,
brushed-metal sport steering wheel with Mustang logo frames the
factory instrumentation augmented by below-dash Equus® gauges to
monitor oil pressure, alternator output, and coolant temperature.
The woodgrain-trimmed center stack includes slide-lever controls
for the VintageAir® system as well as the factory-original
push-button Philco® AM radio. A custom center console houses the
shift lever for the automatic transmission and Boss® audio controls
with a combination storage compartment-armrest to the rear. (Please
