Vehicle Description
1983 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, formerly known as Sonderklasse, (German
for "special class", abbreviated as "S-Klasse''), is a series of
full size luxury sedan, limousines, and armored sedans produced by
the Mercedes Benz, a division of German company Daimler AG. The
S-Class is the designation for top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz models
and was officially introduced in 1972 with the W116, and has
remained in use ever since. The S-Class is the flagship vehicle for
Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class has debuted many of the company's latest
innovations, including drivetrain technologies, interior features,
and safety systems (such as the first seatbelt pretensioners and
airbags). The S-Class has ranked as the world's best-selling luxury
sedan.
For consignment, a 1983 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL that is a gray market
vehicle. This luxury sedan was imported after the fact as a German
built car, owned in Germany, then imported stateside after that.
Finished in Brown Metallic with a rarely seen stateside brown
velour interior. This was imported around the year 2000 to
Washington, then went to South Dakota before making its way to the
East coast and gracing our Hallowed Halls. Equipped with the
Webasto heater, which is a gasoline heater for when the car is not
running, usually set with a timer or remote, we present to you a
luxury sedan with all the bells and whistles that weren't available
in the US.
Exterior
Achtung!!!! Presenting an all-original car with that thick German
steel and innovative construction we have what was the ultimate
sedan of the time. All bathed in Brown Metallic, with no rust, a
few chips on the sides, nicely minded gaps, and straight steel, a
shiny grille and surround, wipers for the head lighting, and a
darker gray tone for the bumpers and rockers along with the lower
parts of the car. On top is a sunroof, which leads rearward to a
long trunk deck and room for all the passenger's belongings. On the
back are the ribbed tail lighting and MB has a method to their
madness with this design. It's self cleaning! Tinted glass and
trimmings surrounding it are all very good and nice and shiny. From
the tri-pointed star atop the front cowl to the large badge on the
center of the trunk, this is truly a beautifully preserved original
example.
Interior
Machen Sie es sich bequem...brown plastic and vinyl combined with
some brown broadcloth inserts with horizontal stitching. A German
walnut burl veneer is nicely lacquered and houses the seat
adjuster, and door handle. Moving to the passenger compartment, we
see 2 pristine brown heated velour buckets with dark brown ribbed
bolsters and stitched tuck and roll inserts, along with a
convenient headrest. In back is a passenger bench stretching from
side to side, and a thickly padded armrest can be folded down
between the buckets. The center console presents in brown and has a
burl insert for the shifter lever housing surround. Various control
toggles for the heated seats, power windows, and the Webasto heater
to name a few are located here and within the riser, also in burl,
that houses the aftermarket Kenwood AM/FM/CD stereo and climate
control dials and knobs. Above and below on the dash are brown
vinyl panels and in-between is a burl accenting strip running from
door to door. The instrument cluster is nice and clean, and mileage
shows as 166,183 original documented miles. Above the headliner is
a nice tan and wonderful thick pile carpeting that is very clean
and well cared for.
Drivetrain
Leistungsstark und zuverlssig...under the hood stuffed into the
clean and slightly patina engine bay is a 5.0 liter SOHC V8. It is
fed by EFI and produces a nice 228hp. A 4-speed automatic
transmission is on back, and the rear axle weighs in at a gas
saving 2.24 ratio.
Undercarriage
Kompetentes engineering...with only road dirt on top of formerly
undercoated stamped steel is noted underneath. All structurally
solid with no rust, a virtually new tailpipe and muffler, and
plenty of ground effects smooth panels. Independent coil springs
provide the suspension for all 4 corners, and power disc brakes are
also showing up on all 4's. All nicely preserved with some slight
corrosion on aluminum parts beneath. New brake pads all around,
front shocks, and front tie rods are noted.
Drive-Ability
Luxurises Fahren...ahhh to live large and enjoy the spoils of the
wealthy, and now all with the passage of time within your reach,
this car drove and performed beautifully. Behind the wheel I felt
like a master villian in a 80's spy flick racing through the
streets of a small village on my way to set my master plan into
action. A few frowns were noted on my drive, the headlight wipers
didn't wipe, the sunroof opened but did not close and as per our
consignor the Webasto heater has been disconnected but is still
complete.
Mach weiter, lebe gro in this true German built piece of 80's
luxury. Well maintained but not without its flaws, you can be the
only one on your block with a cloth interiored, Benz produced and
used in the Motherland. Beeilen Sie sich, this gray market beauty
won't last!
