Vehicle Description
A cool-cruising classic with a one-family history and even has
cold-blowing A/C... So yeah, we know you like this 1978 Ford LTD
Landau even before you checked out the ultra-affordable price.
When you want to represent the size, flair, and bravado of 1970s
classic American motoring, this one really gets the style right.
But before we dig into the details, it's worth knowing its history.
This is a one-family car. It was purchased new only about an hour
from our showroom. It was said to be purchased to be the owner's
specific highway cruiser. When he passed, it went to his brother,
and he gave it to his son. It's an heirloom level of cherished that
you can see in the straightness of the sheet metal. Another good
reason for such exceptional care is that the Landau was a
range-topper. In fact, Ford basically said they were offering you a
Cadillac. And you can see how this lives up to that level of luxury
with its striking presentation. The black vinyl half roof against
the black paint was a true big shot kind of feature. And all the
brightwork trim and full-length red pinstripe add the right color
to this darkness. It has exceptional details, like the hidden
headlight front end, double opera windows, and full-length trim
that even remains basically unbroken over the Landau's special
fender skirts. The value price leaves room to budget for updating
some details if you so desire. For example, the glossy black paint
is a respray from about 10 years ago, and so you may want to give
it a professional detail to get it above driver quality. Or trade
in the 20-inch panther polished alloys for the original wheels
(they came with the sale, too.) But overall, there is an intricate
style to this one that's rare, unique, and absolutely
irresistible.
The touch of red on the outside also happened to be your preview of
the full red interior. It's wonderfully vintage with the detailed
cloth seat pattern, plenty of wood-like trim, and courtesy lights
that still greet you when you open the door. This has the space and
seatbelts to seat up to six, but when it's just you, the fold-down
armrest provides individualized comfort. It's not perfect, but for
a car approaching 45 years old, it has an impressive time capsule
presentation. In fact, it will be tough to spot any upgrades. The
radio is still a Ford unit, but it's now a later AM/FM digital tune
with cassette. And the factory air conditioning blows cold with a
newer compressor and modern R134a refrigerant. So what you really
have is a true vintage atmosphere that also knows how to be a
comfortable cruiser for today's world.
With a car that's been so original so far, you'll be quite happy to
see such a stock presentation of the 351 cubic-inch V8 under the
hood. And with the lineage of this one, it's hard to believe this
is anything but the original powerhouse, and even the odometer is
believed to reflect the full actual mileage. But just because this
is a time capsule, doesn't mean you should hesitate to add miles to
the odometer. After all, with features like a three-speed automatic
transmission, power steering, power brakes, front discs, and the
rarely seen cruise control, this LTD is an awesome anytime
cruiser.
A car with this kind of history also means you get terrific
paperwork. This includes the factory buildsheet, dealer invoice,
original bill of sale, owner's manual, and warranty card. It's
amazing you can get this kind of standout vintage cruiser for such
an affordable price. That's why we know it will be gone quickly.
