ad Heacock Classic told the tale of the race series that spawned
the Z/28: Ford's Mustang launched a new market for personal sporty
cars in 1964, forcing GM to react with their Chevrolet Camaro in
1967. These two competed head-to-head in showrooms, stoplight match
ups, at drag strips, and on road courses. The most intense of these
battles were conducted on the road courses of America and Canada in
the Sports Car Club of America's Trans-Am series. Introduced in
1966, the Trans-Am was open to four-passenger production cars in
two classes €" 2.0 liter and under and 2.0 liter to 5.0 liter. To
everyone's satisfaction, the new Trans-Am series captured more than
a passing interest with both race fans and the automotive press €"
an impressive achievement for a first year race series. The
Chevrolet Z28 would write Trans Am history. Offered here with a
good deal of that Trans Am mean streak equipment (and an updated
350 cubic-inch V8) underneath a very mean-streaky
metallic-red-with-gold-stripes exterior, is a striking '69 Z28
Tribute. Showing 81,836 miles on its odometer-fewer than 1,375
miles per-year on average since new-this Z is a well-executed
tribute to the car that Mark Donohue drove into SCCA TransAm
history. The exterior metallic dark-red paint on the car has been
refreshed to driver quality. (To best assess the quality of the
paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up
photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) The surface is
smooth across all body panels with some patina. The body is free of
dings, dents, or other damage. The bespoke wide gold stripes-unique
to the Z28-applied to the hood and trunk lid are a performance
message. The way the stripes travel over the rear-deck spoiler is
one of those styling details that quickly identified the Z28 on the
street. And if the stripes didn't make the point, the blacked-out
front grille, cowl-induction hood, and multiple Z28 badges-all
displayed on this example-would do the trick. Cabin glass and
lighting lenses are clear and undamaged. Chrome front and rear
bumpers and limited chrome body trim all shines as it should.
Body-panel alignment and panel gaps are factory-correct. Badging
includes Z28 emblems in the front grille, on the front fenders, and
rear-end panel, as well as Camaro-script emblems on the front hood
and both front fenders. The car's staggered 14- and 15-inch
Corvette-style wheels are mounted with Prime Well® P5850 195/70 14
tires in front; Uniroyal Rallye GTS 275/60 15 in the rear. The
silver paint on the steel wheels, the chrome trim rings, and the
Chevrolet Motor Division center caps are all in excellent
condition. The car's interior generally retains a factory
appearance. The overall color theme is black with horizontally
pleated vinyl seat upholstery and complementary door trim, black
dashboard, headliner, and cabin carpeting combining for a classic
serious-business look. A riveted-wood-rim, 3-spoke sport steering
wheel frames a three-instrument instrument cluster showcasing the
120-mph speedometer. A SunPro® Super Tach II tachometer is mounted
on the right-hand side of the steering column. Auxiliary AutoGage®
instruments monitoring oil pressure, coolant temperature, and
alternator output are located forward of the grab-bar-style shift
lever for the automatic transmission on the woodgrain-trimmed
console. Stock controls are present o
