This 1953 Studebaker Commander Restomod really delivers the best of
everything. After all, the distinct body contains a leather-lined
A/C interior, overdrive transmission, upgraded suspension,
four-wheel disc brakes, and a fuel-injected V8. It makes this bold
red coupe a standout that's easy to show off everywhere.
Famed designer Raymond Loewy really understood how to take his time
and let the sheet metal develop sophisticated lines. The long
flowing hood and short rear deck instantly make this sporty. Plus,
the dual grilles, wraparound back window, and mirror-like
form-fitting bumpers make this truly elegant. And while you can
tell there has been a solid investment in keeping this classic
style looking great, you can also see that money was spent updating
this Studebaker for more modern times. The red paint has the
vibrant look of a modern investment. It was part of a multi-year
restoration that was completed in 2018. The receipts total nearly
$80k just for the materials, with less than 175 miles on the car
since it was finished, the whole package really looks fresh and
terrific. We love how they took the time with the details,
including the tri-star logos that were a 1953-only feature because
it was so close to Mercedes. And the wheels have a classic
whitewall style, but they are a full custom setup with 18-inch
polished alloys and a custom color-matched dust shield that proudly
announce this is a '53.
The red continues inside, and now it's joined by a bright white.
And because there are so few miles on the car, it all feels fresh
and vibrant. This was thoroughly upgraded, but it was also
thoughtfully done with an eye for vintage style. For example, you
have the classic bench seat up front, but it's now done in supple
leather. The rear seat, door panels, and even the trunk were also
done to match. There are well-integrated modern amenities like
cold-blowing air conditioning and an AM/FM radio with Bluetooth and
remote. There's also a banjo-style sports steering wheel, a tilt
column, and an upgraded gauge package that give you a great driving
feeling while still looking vintage.
Under the hood is a clean style with color-matched Studebaker
engine covers. But it doesn't take much to notice that it's a far
more potent motor than Studebaker ever offered. This is a 4.8-liter
LS-based fuel-injected V8 with an upgraded cam. It's ready to
showcase with plenty of polish on the compressor, alternator,
aluminum radiator, Spectra air grabber, aluminum radiator, and
more. Plus, sharp-looking Hooker headers help add power while
contributing to the rumble of the dual exhaust. And the upgrades
don't end there. You have a tubular A-arm front end, a strong Ford
9-inch rear, power steering, four-wheel power disc brakes, and
four-speed automatic transmission w/highway-friendly overdrive.
The sale comes complete with build receipts and restoration photos.
The solid and powerful feeling you get on the road tells you this
is a well-done custom coupe. So it makes for a distinctive and fun
total package you need to get your hands on right now.
