You can't help but notice the well-built performance-built 350ci
V8, a cool all-red style, and plenty of other upgrades. So while we
would like to call this 1978 Chevrolet Caprice Classic a sleeper,
this coupe has just been so well customized that it makes a lasting
first impression.
The chiseled good looks of this Chevy have aged rather well. It's
because this was one of the most stylish cars of the late 1970s,
and we are only now fully appreciating the work of the designers.
It has a well-creased hood, angular quarter windows, and there's a
style line that runs from headlight to tail light. And the rear
window is a unique single piece of glass that was the most daring
way to create a fastback look since the first Plymouth Barracuda.
The factory-correct Carmine Red Metallic paint was given a respray
later in life to make sure it has a good gloss and shine. And we
particularly like this color because it sets the tone right for
this special coupe. The color has a dark sophistication worthy of a
well-presented Caprice, but there's also a hint of vividness that
comes from any red color. And that goes well with the raised white
letter tires and Keystone Klassic wheels to hint at the old-school
muscle car fun that's also in this Chevy (more on that in a
moment.)
The bold red interior has a similar appeal to the exterior. After
all, there's an aggressive nature in the brightness, but the way it
coordinates with the exterior color is a European level of
sophistication. The split front bench seat has been restored to
keep a button-top factory-style pattern, and it means there are
seat belts for up to six people in this full-size coupe. There are
the right comfortable cruiser features like a tilt steering column,
cruise control, and an upgraded AM/FM digital tuner w/cassette. But
the NK4 steering wheel and A/C component sacrificed for power are
some more hints at what awaits you under the hood.
This was born with a V8 cruiser, but the polished components you
see signal that the motor under the hood now is a far more potent
offering. It's a 350 cubic-inch motor that has been upgraded for
power with a Quick Fuel four-barrel carburetor, a Weiand aluminum
intake, and headers. This also seems to have a mild cam that warms
up to have a more powerful nature, and it adds a nice tune to the
dual exhaust and Flowmaster mufflers. Plus, any time you want to
make sure this Caprice doesn't go incognito, there are exhaust
cutouts to really give you a thunderous rumble. But more than just
the power and sound, you'll enjoy this one on the road because it
has the right features. The three-speed automatic transmission,
power steering, power brakes, front discs, and thick sway bars
front and rear make this a great all-around solid driver.
This is reported to even be a two-owner car. And part of that is
backed up by the exceptional paperwork file that includes the
original window sticker, dealer invoice, owner's manual, and
factory buildsheet. This is the distinct classic American coupe
with the power you always hoped it would have. Don't miss this
