1951 Ford Custom Convertible
It took a few years after World War II for automakers to introduce
completely new postwar era cars. Most had been updates of pre-war
cars, and with demand high, Ford had to respond. Their troubles
began during the 1930's, as the Great Depression and increasing
competition had slowed some of the company's success. Henry Ford's
persistence on updating the antiquated suspension system had been
another factor, and as the war came to an end, the Ford Motor
Company emerged in declining financial health. They turned to
designer George Walter, commonly known as the 'Cellini of Chrome'
for a sleek new streamlined design to take them into the 50's, and
the Ford brand was off and running again.
For consignment, a mild resto-mod with our consignor having
purchased the car several years ago and enjoyed it not only locally
but also on long trips and out of state car shows where it
performed without a hiccup. Retaining all its original lines and
charm then adding in the modern drivetrain from a 1993 Ford
Mustang. We present to you the 1951 Ford Custom Convertible.
Exterior
Perfectly aligned straight panels bathed in Pale Yellow base coat
then a clear coat, cover this immaculate car. All new chrome and
stainless trim has been painstakingly added to exact
specifications. Beautiful trim spears break up the yellow which is
truly miles deep with only a few flaws seen. Beltline trim spears
give the car a classy look, as do the squinting oval taillights
which are framed by well-rounded fenders. A black canvas
convertible top is now on and works flawlessly. A clear mar free
plastic window is inserted into the back. On all 4 corners are
15-inch steel wheels which are adorned by spoked and ribbed full
wheel covers. Wrapping these beautiful wheels are wide whites in
radial form.
Interior
For the interior...simple but impressive with saddle seats in
Naugahyde. For the seating cushions and darker saddle Naugahyde for
the sides and back. The door panels emulate this with chrome sills
and a mix of saddle lower that have a peppering of chrome
trimmings, power window controls, and cranks along with a tan
swoosh embroidered into them to differentiate the colors. An
aftermarket wood burl banjo steering wheel is proudly perched atop
the newer tilt column and looks just perfect. As is the dash in
more Pale Yellow with a speedometer directly in front of the driver
along with a few aftermarket gauges all mounted in a nice machined
aluminum panel. Strewn throughout this panel are a litany of cream
bakelite knobs, a clock, the original AM radio, and an aftermarket
cruise control module. Hanging below the dash are not only more
aftermarket gauges but a Vintage Heat & AC controller and a modern
AM/FM/CD player. Clean gold medium pile carpet floods the floors
and on the hump is a console/cup holder to keep your drinks safe on
those long drives.
Drivetrain
I'm unfolding my napkin and getting ready to eat off this engine
bay, it's that clean and yummy. A 5.0 Liter V8 courtesy of a 1993
Mustang is now residing in a matte finished stainless steel lined
engine bay. An AOD 4-speed automatic transmission is seen on the
back. And way back is a Ford 8.8" rear axle.
Undercarriage
As expected, plenty of new parts, and some rebuilds, but absolutely
no rust seen at all. A solid X frame with strong body hangers which
are supported by the frame, rockers look just fab, and so do the
floorpans. Independent coil spring suspension courtesy of a Jaguar
XJ-6 is upfront, and leaf springs hold up the rear. Power disc
brakes are on the front and for the rear stopping power we note
power drums. A dual exhaust system snakes its way rearward and uses
Magnaflow mufflers to quiet the roar of the 5.0.
Drive-Ability
My partner in crime and I could not get enough of this car. It
started right up and idled smoothly. A very comfortable interior,
super smooth shifting, and an overall great driver. Solid steering
and no creaks or complaining as we put it through its paces. We
love the updated heating system, especially on these cold
Pennsylvania winter days.
An excellent resto-modded example of an everyday man's car. Just a
beautiful job, a mechanical marvel to watch run, to hear and look
at. All seemingly right off the 1951 showroom floor but with a
modern twist...waiting for you in our sprawling hallowed halls.
