vintage 4x4 market's best kept secret: the Dodge Ramcharger. -
Motor Trend, January 2019 The Motor Trend writers continued:
Existing deep in the shadow of the Bronco and the Blazer even since
new, the Ramcharger gets passed over for big-money builds and
restorations, leaving the majority of surviving examples beaten and
abused. It's a shame, considering these two-doors are handsome
brutes with a similar brawny, let-your-chest-hair-flow vibe that
makes the Bronco and K5 Blazer so popular. The... SUV gave
outdoorsy Mopar fans exactly what they sought: rugged
individuality. The Ramcharger was ostensibly a base-model Dodge
pickup that had nine inches chopped from the wheelbase and with the
bulkhead and roof lopped off the cab. The truck came standard
without a roof, but the vast majority were fitted with a heavy,
drop-on, optional steel top with a flip-up fiberglass rear window;
a vinyl soft top was also offered. The bed area of the interior
could be covered in rubber or carpet. Offered here is a 1978 Dodge
Ramcharger in two-tone blue over black. The SUV's odometer reads
96,338. This Ramcharger was a well-maintained example and has been
professionally repainted to a high standard. The Ramcharger's
exterior has been resprayed in gloss light blue over dark matte
blue. The light blue paint, primarily on the upper surfaces, shows
an even finish and very good luster overall. The lower body wears
the dark-blue matte finish with a thin complementary stripe adding
distinctiveness. Two recessed portions of the hood are also painted
matte dark blue. The roof is also dark blue and shows small dents
on the leading edge and light patina elsewhere. There are no dings,
dents, or other damage to any sheet metal panels. The
matte-silver-painted bumpers and front grille are in excellent
condition. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim
finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the
car in the accompanying gallery.) Entry-assist chrome grab-handles
have been installed rearward of the doors; exterior chrome mirrors
are pitted. Factory badging-including D-O-D-G-E recessed lettering
at the top of the grille, RamCharger emblems on the front fenders,
and the ram-figure hood ornament-is correctly in place. Cabin glass
and lighting lenses are clear and undamaged. Silver-painted 15-inch
steel wheels with chrome baby moon hubcaps and trim rings are
mounted with Goodyear® Wrangler 31x10.50 LT outline-white-letter
tires. The truck has been lifted slightly. The SUV's interior
retains a virtually stock look throughout with most surfaces
displaying some patina from age and use. Dark-blue fabric seat
upholstery is vertically pleated and trimmed in blue vinyl; it
exhibits light wear. Newer dark-blue carpeting covers the cabin
floor and continues into the cargo area. The roof is painted light
blue and is without a roof light. Door trim has been refinished but
shows wear. The stock 2-spoke steering wheel frames the original
(refinished) dashboard and stock analog gauge package. The Hurst®
shift lever for the 4-speed manual transmission is mounted on the
floor next to the transfer-case 4WD selector lever. (Please view
