Vehicle Description
1993 Dodge W150 Pickup
1981-1993 was the first generation of Dodge Ram pickup trucks.
Dodge had technically been producing trucks since 1917, but their
1981 pickups were the first ones to sport the Ram name. In order to
signify this, Dodge slapped a ram's head hood ornament on the
trucks after Lee Iacocca, Chrysler's President and CEO at the time,
decided it was a good mascot. Fun fact: the ram's head logo was
first used in 1933 to represent the trucks and rugged vehicles made
by Dodge but was no longer used after 1950. So, Iacocca's decision
in 1981 to resurrect the Ram could actually be considered a vintage
throwback.
For consignment and proudly presented for your consideration, a
lifted, reworked and beefed up 1993 Dodge Ram W150. The beneficiary
of a 5,000 mile ago tear down to the frame then repainted and a new
larger engine installed we now have a truck that is truly "Built
Ram Tough"
Exterior
A fresh respray of black paint bathes steel panels which are very
straight and have well minded gaps and seams. A few flaws and
bubbles are noted on the top front of the cab and all trimmings are
very shiny and straight with nary even the beginnings of any
dimpling or fading. The front grille, with a single square
headlight on either side uses a rectangle design, the standard of
the 80's and early 90's. Simplified, yet sophisticated, the grille
is well preserved. A long black raised center hood with the
throwback Ram's head emblem is flanked by a solid straight front
fender on either side. Long straight slab steel sides are only
broken up by the chrome from the fender emblem, door handle, and
mirror. The doors are straight and close with a quality thud. The
long 8-foot bed is made for hauling and while showing signs of use
this is no evidence of abuse. The rear gate is looking like new and
is flanked by wrap-around style taillights and a clean chrome
bumper below. Satin finish silver wheels area on all 4 corners and
are wrapped with Kenda 33x12.5R15 knobby off-road rubber.
Interior
Red velour broadcloth in bench format is the seating in the
spacious cab and shows just a bit of wear to the piping and vinyl
lower of the driver's side. The original textured plastic steering
wheel is fronting the dash, which is all original design, has wood
applique panels and a trio of round gauges pods. Power windows, and
power lock toggles are added to the nice door panels also in red.
A/C is installed, and a nice red carpet with just a bit of wear
floods the floors. An AM/FM/Cassette with blue digital readout and
a toggle to control the balance is neatly within the dash as well
as a pictograph for the 4-wheel drive operation and an overdrive
activation button.
Drivetrain
Peering into the cavernous engine bay we are met with a non
original 318ci V8 in Magnum trim with a mild performance cam added
within. It is fed by EFI and strapped to the back is a rebuilt A500
4-speed automatic transmission. Driving the tires is a 9 1/4"
axle.
Undercarriage
All buttoned up underneath with a solid frame and flooring. Leaf
spring suspension is on fore and aft to cushion the ride and for
braking we have power front disc brakes and power rear drums. A
single piped exhaust system feeds spent gasses through a stock
style muffler. We note a lift kit has been added to the suspension
to give extra ground clearance.
Drive-Ability
I love the perspective one gets behind the wheel of a lifted pickup
truck although I usually require a step ladder to gain access. That
said, this truck fired right up with the twist of the key and off
to the test track I went. On the track the truck performed with
adequate power, good bias free braking and superior handling. A
smooth ride for a truck as well. All functions were operational
during my drive, but I didn't take the time to test the grip of the
knobby rubber by doing any off-roading.
The final year for the W & D designation for Dodge trucks and in
this writer's opinion, the best year. 4-wheel drive capability, a
lifted suspension and a super comfy bench seat all work together to
bring you a truck that is at home not only on the street but on any
trail you'd like to conquer. Presented with a few cosmetic faults
but none being a deterrent, waiting for you in our South Mallway
and ready to climb mountains.
