Vehicle Description
1977 GMC K15 Pickup
Officially named the "Rounded-Line" trucks by GM, the 1973-1987
Chevy C/K trucks were known more casually as the "box-body" or
"square-body" pickup. Sporting a new body style that incorporated
rounded corners around the wheel well in addition to a rounded
windshield and door frames, the third-generation Chevy C/K trucks
had an entirely new look. Larger and wider, the pickups looked more
box-like, which is why they were coined the "box-body" trucks.
For consignment, a 4x4 Sierra, a comfy driver, a short bed with
bedliner, a new transmission, and all wrapped up in burgundy with
15-inch rally wheels.
Exterior
Known as the rounded line as tagged by GM, the lines appear to be
more square and rectangle than anything else. This includes a
rectangular grille with square headlights in square bezel panels
and a shiny bumper below. Straight burgundy steel wraps all sides
and the bed, and all support well minded gaps. Some thin stainless
trimmings finish off the wheel wells and a stainless trim spear
runs the length of the truck and drops down at the front and rear
to meet a lower trim line. We see invasive rust bubbling up on the
bedside just behind the driver's rear tire. The bed is covered with
a ribbed tuff plastic full liner which even covers the sides and
tailgate. 15-inch rally wheels are wrapped by like new
32x11.50R15LT raised white letter BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A
all-weather deep tread tires.
Interior
Black molded vinyl buttons up the door panels and these have a
nicely contrasting brushed aluminum insert that holds the door
release and window crank. This panel is trimmed with a Sheridan
border and down below is a carpeted band in black. Inside is a
black velour broadcloth covered bench seat with smooth black vinyl
bolsters on the sides and front surrounding of this bench. The
original dash is intact and looking clean. The dash top is clean
and shows no cracking or distortions and the lower is all steel in
body matching burgundy. Above is one piece formed headliner, and on
the floors is clean medium pile black carpet with deep tread rubber
protectors and in the center is the chrome handle shifter for 2 and
4 wheel drive modes.
Drivetrain
A consigner stated original 350ci V8 is topped with a single
4-barrel carburetor and a consignor stated rebuilt TH350 3-speed
automatic. This setup throws power rearward to a Dana 60 axle and
forward to a Dana 44 axle. The entire engine bay looks original and
great with its blue painted block and supple hoses.
Undercarriage
A solid steel frame and undercarriage floor pans, rockers and toe
kicks hold a new fuel tank with straps and look good and
unrestored. We note some invasive rust on the bottom side of the
bed floor. Dual exhaust sends spent gasses to the rear of the truck
through twin Flowmaster mufflers and then to the open air behind
each rear tire. Leaf springs with power disc brakes are on front,
and more leaf springs with power drum brakes are on the back.
Drive-Ability
A quick fire up and the engine came to life! This K15 drove just
like a truck should. Adequate acceleration, good braking and it
handled all our test track had to offer. All mechanicals were
working, and the interior proved to be comfortable and visually
appealing.
This mildly restored short bed K15 GMC is a stunner and deserves a
serious look if you are a Sierra fan and looking for something that
hasn't been run down every trail or hauled well beyond its load
capacity. A nice well-kept example with lots of life left in it,
remember what was said in 1978...A good truck can be the start of a
long friendship.
