The 1975 Chevy Corvette, along with the automotive industry as a
whole, would experience a significant transformation at the onset
of the new model year. Because of serious health issues and
environmental contamination associated with the use of lead fuel,
it was determined that the automotive industry would - and should -
phase it out. Tetraethyllead (also known as TTL, or simply "lead")
was introduced in the 1920's as an additive to prevent fuel from
auto-igniting in high compression internal combustion engines.
While the lead additives allowed engine designers to produce more
powerful, higher compression engines, it also produced a dangerous
neurotoxin through exhaust emissions, which resulted in many cases
of acute, and widespread lead poisoning, especially in
children.
For consignment, a numbers matching slightly modified version of
the 1975 C3 Corvette. A great entry level car to get you into the
Corvette game, it's in good condition and provides a sporty ride,
while with the emissions regulations kicking in horsepower was
limited. But then you could save gas!
Exterior
Fiberglass bathed in Dark Red Metallic paint is seen all over this
car. A T topper roof and neoprene bumpers with hidden headlights in
front, curvaceous fenders all around this coke bottle design pony
car. A Daytona style hood with heat extractors has been added but
has not been color matched to the body. Touch ups and cracking of
the paint is seen, most prominently on the front and rear bumpers,
along with some cracking of the fiberglass. Chrome trimmings are
seen surrounding the glass and dividing the cockpit for the T top.
A shiny stainless steel rocker trim is curving on to bridge the gap
between the fenders and the doors. A cove is in the front quarter
and side, this car is pre greenhouse glass, long "flying buttress"
type B pillars supporting each side of the near vertical rear
glass. 15-inch rally deep dish wheels are on all 4 corners and dual
exhaust with quad tips peek out from underneath the rear
bumper.
Interior
As a nice compliment to the Dark Red, Medium Saddle leather is
wrapping the surfaces of the interior. High back buckets with a
wood applique adorned center console races forward to the tan
molded dash. Deep set gauges front the original steering wheel, and
tan carpeting very clean floods the floors. A multitude of factory
gauges, reminiscent of an airplane cockpit, are in the center of
the dash and an aftermarket AM/FM stereo is mounted in the factory
spot. Door panels use the wood applique as well as some tan
carpeting that matches the floors.
Drivetrain
Opening the hood, we see the orange GM block and valve covers of
this numbers matching 350ci L48 V8 mill. It has been updated as per
our consignor and presents with slight patina, but still nicely
detailed and presenting. A single 4-barrel carburetor is atop, and
on back a numbers matching TH400 3-speed automatic coupled with a
3.55 rear axle.
Undercarriage
Very nicely preserved underneath with a smooth factory coating of
undercoating and no rust. Full bore Corvette suspension is on, and
power disc brakes show up on all 4 corners. We see dual exhaust
running front to back with a catalytic converter and muffler
delete.
Drive-Ability
She fired right up and on the test track it performed beautifully.
Nice smooth acceleration, smooth shifting and good brakes. It
handles like it's on rails and the T top option is a nice feature
without having to fuss with a canvas mechanism. All functions were
working well during our test driving experience save for the
tachometer and dash lights. We also noticed a leak from the rear
main seal of the engine after our drive.
A rounded rear version from 1975, in nice condition mechanically, a
good solid interior, and just a bit of touch up on areas of the
neoprene and fiberglass but still looking good. A few updates and
well maintained, here's your chance to get onto the game for little
money.
