This 1977 Suzuki LJ50 is a true 4x4 built in the tradition of small
but might Japanese Kei cars. So it's something both unique and
rugged for some interesting classic car fun.
These were nicknamed Jimny, and the bright yellow paint makes this
little guy as endearing as a cricket. It's not a concours-level
presentation, because after all, it's still a 4x4. But there is a
nice level of detail - right down to the Suzuki insignia in the
backup light. And while these were not heavy on options, this has
some very desirable details. The full-size spare on a rear
swing-away mount, which signals a later JL model. And you have an
attractive-looking tan package with full soft doors and a full
convertible top (just look at how clean those side windows are!)
that make this look like a true mini Jeep.
The Jimny was more often sold in RHD markets like Japan and
Australia, and so it seems quite rare to find an LHD model. These
are meant to be open to the world, and so you have a package that's
basic but attractive. You even have the exterior style of a bright
yellow with white accents continue inside. There's a grippy classic
steering wheel, four-speed floor shift, essential gauges (with
speedo in kilometers,) thick rubber mats, and even proper shoulder
seatbelts. And there are two high-back bucket seats to provide good
comfort. There is no rear seat, because after all, keeping weight
down keeps the fun going.
Under the hood is the 539cc motor. It's a minuscule size made to
fit Japanese Kei car standards. But the secret is it's a two-stroke
setup. That means a durable construction and more revolutions/power
than a four-stroke counterpart. It's still by no means a speed
demon, but it does give this the right substance to be a bit of fun
around town, in the neighborhood, or on the farm trails. So it's a
small but rugged 4x4. And the big-time racers out there are likely
thinking about how this could be the coolest paddock vehicle that
would turn more heads than the million-dollar race cars.
