Vehicle Description
This 2004 Mercedes SL500 is that powerful, elegant, sophisticated,
and all-around sinister droptop that knows how to make an entrance.
A legendary German convertible with only 35,750 miles on the clock,
this SL500 has been impeccably cared for through the years, and
because it's always been a fair-weather weekend car it's still in
incredible shape today. All that power, luxury, and gorgeous style
for the cost of a 5-year old Hyundai? Yes please!
The 5th generation R230 form offers all the precisely refined
German engineering and style you could possibly want, and a
combination of great care and shelter over the years (this car has
never left sunny NV and TX) has yielded some definite benefits,
leaving this amazing SL looking about as close to 'like new' as
you'll ever see in an 18-year-old car. The Pewter Metallic Silver
shade is in very clean form, showing a super nice, miles-deep shine
and no signs of any major mishaps to detract from its appearance.
In fact, other than a very small dent in the hood (probably the
result from a squirrel clumsily dropping its acorn on it, but
regardless, it's a minor imperfection even a novice PDR
professional could pop out in 5 minutes) and the usual minor road
debris at the front end, we really haven't found anything to
complain about on this Merc. Take a look from up front and you'll
see that the headlights sit behind clear lenses - always a good
sign of having been spared from exposure to the elements - and the
universally recognized Mercedes badge is sharp and unpitted as it
rests in the center of the front grille. The exterior alignment on
this SL500 is in top form all over, in fact - you won't find an
uneven gap between panels or anything off kilter anywhere, and the
doors shut with that typical German 'THUD' we've come to expect
from these up-market cars. Mercedes mastered the retractable hard
top (marketed as the Vario Roof) as few other manufacturers have,
refining their engineering to arrive at a finished result that
raises and lowers without issue, seals well and is free from the
random noises that often plague its competition.
The gorgeous black leather interior provides a very nice contrast
with the silver exterior, and as you might already expect in such a
low-mileage car, it's in great shape too. There aren't many signs
of wear on the leather surfaces of the contoured power bucket
seats, nor on the center console sitting between them, and even the
carpet lining the floor looks like it has been treated with respect
since new. Mercedes never was a company to cut corners as far as
comfort and convenience features are concerned, and this SL500 is
no exception - you'll find a navigation system inside the
multi-function LCD monitor, cruise control, power
locks/windows/seats/mirrors, and cruise control on board, as well
as dual-zone air conditioning that's blowing strong and cold.
Pretty much, every single power option and luxury you could get in
2004 is in tow, and all that woodgrain you see on the door panels
and center console is real, not the faux applique that plasters so
many new cars today. The interior's level of functionality is
impressive - all of the gauges in the instrument cluster function
as intended behind crystal clear lenses, as do all control knobs
and switches, and the cockpit is laid-out in a very driver-centric
orientation. Out back, the trunk area looks to be in good order,
with clean gray carpeting lining its floor and walls, and even
though there's not a ton of space back there it's more than you'll
typically find in a 2-seat roadster.
A powerful 5.0 liter V8 sits underneath the hood in a very clean
engine bay and it's a potent performer that provides plenty of
acceleration - Mercedes equipped it with 302 horsepower and 339
torque, which is quite a bit for a roadster with relatively light
curb weight. The powerplant starts up easily and runs smoothly -
it's been regularly serviced so it's at the top of its game - and
it teams with a 7-speed automatic transmission to provide a great
driving experience. The SL500's low profile and finely tuned Active
Body Control suspension combines with its smooth power steering and
driveline traction control to make it a blast to take through
turns, while its ABS 4-wheel disc braking system brings it to
prompt stops when called upon. This sharp looking German drop top
rides on a set of 18-inch AMG wheels outfitted with staggered
255/40/18 front and 285/35/18 rear Continental Extreme Contact
tires.
