Vehicle Description
1954 Chevrolet Bel Air
So Imagine you are driving anywhere in these United States of
"Merica, and you happen across an old dilapidated barn with its
door cracked open due to the wind pulling it. Inside you can see a
hint of what may be a classic but closer inspection will be needed.
Hence, you mosey up to the front door of the adjoining house and an
elderly man answers with a shotgun in his hand. You back away
trying to avoid his snarling barking dog, and eventually get to
asking about the vehicle in his barn. To which he abruptly replies
"Aint for sale" C YA!
Well here we welcome visitors and they can inquire about any car in
our for sale inventory and we will be happy to have as close an
inspection as you may want. Here we have a barn find/abandoned
restoration which is in its beginning throws, but completion will
need some definite TLC. It has a new, never fired .30 over 350ci
V8, a TH400 trans with a stall converter, and a 512 lift cam with
rocker rollers. The remainder of the car is going to take some
effort, but when you are done, a real classic lies beneath all that
patina.
Exterior
Plenty of surface rust and invasive rust for the body work which
has steel that is bathed in a Pueblo Tan lower and an India Ivory
roof. Our consignor states that all the trimming are with this car
although some I did not see. The chrome will need a thorough
re-plating all around. It has its charm in the features though with
the bump out rear quarters, trim spear in tow tone with more
chrome, wrap around glass and the iconic early Bel Air grille.
Interior
Its original, however, more TLC will be needed on all surfaces
including door panels, dash, seats, headliner and flooring. Assume
nothing is in working order, based on overall condition.
Drivetrain
Not quite complete but it is a 350V8 with roller rockers, a 512
lift cam, Edelbrock dual plane intake, camelback 194 heads, and it
has been bored .030 over. On the back is a TH400 3-speed automatic
with a 2800 stall converter. A 3.73 posi 10 bolt rear axle is on
also.
Undercarriage
At one point the undercarriage has been restored and now we see a
black painted frame, black floor pans, some repairs to the fenders
and rockers, some remain, and a Fatman Mustang II front end with
chrome coil overs. Bringing up the rear suspension is a Posie's
slider spring set up. Disc brakes are noted on the front along with
drums on the rear as well as a power rack and pinion unit. We note
the trunk drop offs have severe invasive rust and give a good view
of the underside of the trunk lid while peering upwards. All the
best intentions however time ran out, so you will have to pick up
where he left off.
An ambitious undertaking and plenty of patience for this build but
if you can get her, start work immediately, and keep your nose at
the grinder, you'll have a dandy.
