For Sale: 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230S in ladybrand, free state

Vehicle Description

Family Vehicle in need of being rescued from the barn.

Siegfried Kapp - the original owner - bought the 230s and had the engine replaced with a more powerful 280s engine as he used it for towing his caravan on holidays. He also had air conditioning installed when he bought the car. Siegfried was an avid car enthusiast and Automobile Association member. He lived in Bloemfontein South Africa where he collected and restored Volkswagens and Karmann Ghia's. The 230s lived there in a garage until Erika de Jager - Siegfried's niece - bought the 230s and caravan as a package deal from Siegfried in the early 90's.

The 230s mainly ferried  the family of seven to town and back on Sundays and to holiday destinations with that same caravan in tow. On the farm the 230s also lived in a garage until the carburettor got clogged. The carburettor was removed to be cleaned but the 230s became forgotten as a Volkswagen Bus  was now the new family carrier, so the 230s was left standing in the garage since 1996 and it got deregistered in 2005. Later on the 230s was moved from the garage to a cement-floored enclosed barn as more vehicles needed garage space close to the farmhouse. The children were now all grown, so the caravan took up residence in the garden as spare accomodation for the grandchildren.

The 59930 Miles on the odometer is believed to be correct but there is no way to prove this.

The 230s is complete. Interrior and exterior trims and hubcaps are all there. The chassis is in excellent condition. The body is in good condition apart from the left rear quarter panel that has rusted but the metal looks solid and it should be a simple repair. The interior is fair considering the 5 children, 17 years of silent neglect and a rodent infestation it survived. Gearbox and running gear is still in great condition. The 230s is a Free State (inland) vehicle since 1966 to date, so it is a dry climate car that lives on a farm in a barn.

The family would like to see the 230s go to a new owner keen on restoring her. Price is negotiable pending the intention of the prospective buyer. The 230s is being sold "as is" Relocation and paperwork costs will be for the buyer.

The caravan - however - is not for sale.
