the 2001 North American Auto Show in Detroit, the Mazda RX-8
heralded a long-awaited return to the celebrated Japanese
automakers rotary-powered sports/GT cars. First available in North
America for the 2003 model year, the RX-8 was based upon Mazdas SE
platform and featured a versatile 2+2 body style, with rear-seat
entry/exit made easier with a discreet half-door at each side of
the car. Power was provided by a 1.3-liter Wankel rotary engine,
dubbed RENESIS by Mazda. Power ratings ranged from 189 to 238
horsepower, with transmission choices including 4- and 6-speed
automatics and 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes. Performance was and
remains electrifying, with speeds of 140 mph and beyond, depending
on specification and model year. Sadly, production ended in 2012,
mainly due to high pricing resulting from the strength of the
Japanese currency. Many versions of the RX-8 were produced, with
major evolutions from 2003-29007 and 2008-2012.Offered with two
