Ford Bronco: A History of Ford's Legendary 4x4 by Todd Zuercher.
For Generation 4, the previous years' trend toward aerodynamic
design forged ahead, with sculpted edges (both inside and out)
replacing boxy corners. On the engineering side, new powertrain and
safety updates took center stage. Affectionately known in
enthusiast circles as the 'brick nose,' the 1987-90 Broncos boasted
a more aerodynamic silhouette than its 'bull nose' predecessors.
Right angles and jutting edges gave way to dynamic sloping lines
for the body, bumpers and mirrors, and headlights were flush with
the front end. A revamped interior featured rounded surfaces in the
dashboard, instrument cluster and climate controls. Offered here is
a 1989 Ford Bronco XLT resprayed in its original Currant Red, a
rich dark-red, non-metallic paint. These fourth-generation Broncos
(as a period MotorWeek review noted) offered comfort and off-road
capability in good measure. This Tennessee-owned truck's odometer
shows 87,782 miles, or fewer than 2,800 miles per-year on average
since new. The Bronco's exterior red paint is attractive and
well-maintained. The finish is evenly glossy and smooth across the
entire truck, the best measure of professional work. The original
fiberglass white roof is in place. (To best assess the quality of
the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up
photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Chrome
bumpers, grille, West-Coast-style side mirrors, door handles,
body-side trim all show excellent shine and no damage, with only
very light patina from age and use, notably on the door handles.
The XLT-specific brushed-metal tailgate trim shows a single small
ding but is otherwise perfect. All cabin glass and lighting lenses
are free of cracks (headlight lenses show some clouding from age).
All factory badging-including the Ford blue-oval emblems front and
rear, Bronco XLT emblems on the front fenders, and 4x4 badge below
the front grille-is properly in place. A black Ford Bronco vinyl
cover on the rear spare-tire (mounted on the swing-away carrier)
shows the bucking-bronco logo. Original 12-hole aluminum wheels are
mounted with BigO® Sun Valley AP 31.0x10.50 LT raised-white-letter
all-season tires. The Bronco's gray interior has been
well-maintained. Gray, carpet-trimmed, XLT door panels with
upholstery-fabric inserts are attractive (but show some fading);
power-window controls are located here. Original gray carpeting is
installed in the cabin and the rear cargo area, and the condition
throughout is generally very good with no damage and only very
light staining; the headliner also shows spots of light staining.
Seat upholstery on the front captain's chairs (separated by a
spacious storage box) and removable (and foldable) rear bench seat
is a very attractive tweed-like tan cloth in a vertically pleated
design. Very light soiling and wear is present on the driver's
seat, but there are no rips or tears; other seating surfaces are
well-maintained. A black, multi-function, Ford-oval-logo-branded
steering wheel frames a gray dashboard enhanced with the upmarket
XLT woodgrain trim. The shift lever for the automatic transmission
is mounted on the steering column. Instrumentation includes the
large speedometer and tachometer with smaller engine-monitoring
gauges; this full instrumentation was an XLT feature. An upgraded
