introduction of the SS454 Chevelle and El Camino in 1970, Chevrolet
officially gave notice it had arrived to dominate the muscle car
war. Available as the wondrously engineered and stunningly
expensive LS6, the Chevelle SS454 was essentially just a few
notches from NASCAR performance territory, and it absolutely
terrified anyone who dared contest it at the dragstrips. Laying
down 450 HP and 500 lb-ft of torque, very few muscle cars of the
era could match it, especially for the price. But, while expensive,
comparably speaking, it was a bargain.Still, for those seeking
exceptional performance without shelling out the coin or worrying
about the fuel requirements and potential maintenance involved with
a near-race engine, the LS5 was the ticket. Using high-performance
components to pepper up the performance of the already-potent 454
CI big-block V-8, the LS5 lent an air of daily drivability to a
race car package. It produced a relatively docile 360 HP yet still
matched the LS6 with 500 lb-ft of torque. The end result was a very
powerful engine with a friendlier demeanor that could still crack
the whip on the street and strip.This 1971 Chevelle SS is equipped
with the LS5 454 and produces 365 HP, up a bit from the previous
year. Having undergone a professional, nut-and-bolt, body-off,
rotisserie restoration, the car features a matching-numbers LS5
engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt rear
end. Fitted with power brakes with front discs, it's finished in
Sunflower Yellow with black striping and fitted with the cowl hood
with hold-down pins. Rolling on argent 5-spoke wheels with
Firestone Wide Oval white-lettering tires, this Chevelle is dressed
with rechromed bumpers, a chrome driver's mirror and dual exhausts
with chrome tips. Inside, a black interior with a bench seat, AM
radio and chrome shifter drive home the point that this car was
