Vehicle Description
1979 Chrysler 300
Chrysler first introduced the 300 back in 1955, and with the debut
of that high-performance 4-seater some would say the idea of the
muscle car was born. Over the next 10 years, Chrysler would bring
to market a range of 300s now referred to as the "letter series,"
starting with that first 300 and continuing on with the 300B, 300C,
300D - a new letter every year with the final 300L in 1965. These
special Chryslers were among the fastest production cars on the
road, equipped with the latest in luxury features.
For consignment, the rebirth of the 300 series for the first time
since 1965. This 1979 first year version only had a production run
of 4,292 so it's a somewhat rare bird. Its V8 engine, boxy square
and rectangle design, large slabs of Detroit iron make this large
sports car adorned with much luxury if you will, but you could
still stay with the best of them. Turn on the AC and let's cruise
at 125mph!
Exterior
The 300 of 1979 started out as a standard SS-platform vehicle which
was coded A74 for the option code. The cars were all painted EW-1
Spinnaker White, and began the conversion process with a decor
package that put special "300" emblems on the grille, door panels,
taillight lenses, and wheel centers on 15 inch police wheels. Red,
white, and blue pin striping down the sides, edging the deck lid
and around the remote sport mirrors gave the car additional
character, while gold "300" numbers were etched into the fixed rear
quarter windows with a decorative pad attached beneath the opening.
The egg crate grille is painted black with the 300 medallion
mounted to its center instead of the stand-up hood ornament on the
Cordoba, and a set of front fender louvers, and dual rectangular
headlights and quarter corner lights gave the car its sophisticated
look, but it's a wolf in a white tuxedo.
Interior
Deep red Corinthian leather covers many of the surfaces inside.
This includes but is not limited to the door panels front high back
wide overstuffed buckets and rear bench. The front buckets have a
stitched band running on either side of the inserts and some faux
buckles are also stitched into this band. A red center console
races through the buckets and up towards the dash. It sports a
machine swirl aluminum panel on its top and red molded plastic
wrapping around the hump on either side. A nice black ball topped
shift lever is reaching for the driver. The dash front for the
instrument cluster is also in the machined swirl pattern and has 2
round gauges flanking the steering column and some black panels
containing various knobs, pulls and levers as well as some warning
lights on either side. More controls are within a lower back band
below the machined dash front and above is a nicely preserved crack
free dash top. Some push button controls, and a stereo which houses
AM/FM and 8 track player. The remainder of the dash is red and
sports some of the red, white, and blue Three Hundred badges in a
small machined swirl panel above the red glove box. A cove a tight,
smooth red vinyl headliner is mounted and below miles of such red
carpeting abound to float the chairs.
Drivetrain
The heart of the matter next to all the luxuries and conveniences
of the interior we have a 360ci V8 which is numbers matching. This
fits within an unrestored yet very clean original engine bay. It's
topped with a factory 4-barrel carburetor and has a numbers
matching A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic on back. This throws
power rearward from the 360 cuber to a 9-1/4 inch 3.23 SureGrip
rear axle. Looking good and original under this hood!
Undercarriage
Surface rust is nearly non-existent with a solid unibody and floor
pans as well as body hangers and rockers. For the front we note
independent torsion bar suspension and power disc braking, and for
the back leaf springs and power drum braking. Dual exhaust is seen
working its way rearward for a downward facing below the bumper
exit.
Drive-Ability
I just love these luxurious executive muscle cars and this one did
not disappoint me. Off to the test track where it has limitless
acceleration, good handling and easy driving with automatic trans
and power steering and braking. All the amenities were functioning
swimmingly, save for the horn which clocked but did not produce any
sound. All else was a great experience, and a nice throwback to my
college days spent in beautiful downtown Rochester, New York.
Only 4,292 examples for this year and this one is all original and
all excellent condition. Square and rectangle design, hemi power
and a luxurious interior make this an executive cruiser and silent
killer if you may want to!
