Alfa's 1900CSS models were the most developed and best performing
of the 1900 Series of vehicles Alfa built from 1950 to 1959. These
"Short-Chassis, Super Sport" models incorporated a variety of
specialized components all fitted to a lightened chassis and custom
coachwork. Under the skin they used improved performance-oriented
features such as a specialized engine and gearbox combination,
improved suspension, brakes, oversized fuel tank and stronger,
reinforced wire wheels.
According to Centro Documentazione Alfa Romeo, 01678 was completed
on March 22, 1954 and sold new through Filiale Milano to the
Societ per il Commercio dei Prodotti Alfa Romeo in Lugano,
Switzerland on July 9 of that year. This exceptional 1900C SS from
the second series, came equipped with the Tipo 1308 twin-Solex
engine, finished in Verde Ortica (Nettle Green) paint.
The 1900css presumably remained in Swiss care, and eventually was
acquired by well-known Swiss collector Carlo Vgele in 1990. Prior
to his purchase, 01678 had been parked since 1972. Mr. Vgele
commissioned Carrozzeria Lopane in Milan to conduct an extensive
photo documented restoration, including a repaint in dark red. It
was delivered to Lopane in running and driving order.
By March 1998, the Super Sprint was under another Swiss collector's
stewardship, and later acquired in 2003 by Christophe Bode of
Munich, Germany. 01678 would join Ian Wade's private museum in
Yorkshire, UK - a substantial and highly important collection of
Italian automobiles.
In 2017, under previous ownership, the 1900 would receive an
additional cosmetic restoration undertaken by Rome-based firm
RizzaClassic - returning the car to its original configuration and
appearance, including the factory-correct Verde Ortica exterior
paint color. This attractive dark metallic green is complimented by
an interior re-created to original patterns using
period-appropriate materials-in this case, tan leather and cloth
with tan wool carpets. Of note the body is laser straight and with
an excellent fit and finish that is seldom seen. Chrome and other
brightwork was refinished as well, again to a very high standard.
Proper Borrani wire wheels with two-ear knock-offs complete.
Today, the Alfa Romeo presents exceptionally well and authentic
throughout as an excellent candidate for continued show and
display, however, importantly it remains eligible for prestigious
vintage rallies and tours, including the Mille Miglia. This CSS
would receive 2021 and 2022 mechanical inspections, detailing and
tune-ups for continued driving enjoyment. The car is accompanied by
a dossier of historical files, photographic binder its first
restoration, Swiss logbook (copy), previous German
registration(copy), records detailing recent maintenance, and
historical research from Alfa Romeo and FCA. 01678 is further
supported with a concourse quality tool roll and matching Borrani
spare wheel. We offer this outstanding, numbers matching 1954 Alfa
Romeo 1900C SS Coupe for worldwide purchase from our Houston, Texas
showroom.
