1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo - 350cid V8 with Heavy Duty Drivetrain,
Original, Unrestored, NICE!
When Chevrolet introduced the Monte Carlo in 1970, they created a
car that didn't fit any particular category, the engineers started
with a clean slate to design a car that was different - a
combination of luxury and sport, a car that didn't have any others
to even compare to at that time. This was the first generation of
the Monte Carlo.
By 1972, these slightly bigger than mid-size coupes were very
popular. Offered in a variety of powertrain packages from small
block V8, to the tire shredding 454 big block, these luxury/sport
automobiles could be found in numbers from coast to coast. From the
initial 1970 release to the final year of the first generation in
1972, only minor styling changes were made to keep the overall look
very recognizable until the next platform was to be released in
1973.
Check out this great example of a "survivor" '72 Monte Carlo
offered by LaFontaine Classic Cars. It is rare to find one of these
in its original state, in such great condition. It does appear
there may have been a repaint at some point during prior ownership
using the factory code "43" Gulf Green to give the faded exterior
some new life. The sheet metal, from the body panels to the floor
boards, is in great shape with no signs of rust or filler cracks to
be seen. The original bumpers and chrome plated trim, door handles,
and mirrors are all looking great while the stainless trim from
front to rear is all intact and in very nice condition. The
matching green vinyl top looks about perfect without underlying
bubbles or tears.
The interior is in its factory configuration with the seats covered
in the stock code "734" Covert which is very close to an ivory
color. The door panels, dash pad, headliner and carpet all appear
to be factory original and all in excellent condition with minimal
signs of wear. The dash board wears simulated wood grain that
surrounds the optional "sport" gauge package featuring 7000 rpm
tachometer, 120 mph speedometer, amp, coolant temperature, and fuel
level gauges, with a clock to the right of the speedo. This dash
and gauge package is very similar to the dash found in the
1970-1972 Chevelle SS - in fact, many parts on the first-generation
Monte Carlo directly interchange with the Chevelle. Additional
options include: Power steering, power front disc brakes, tilt
steering column, remote sideview mirror, door panel map pockets,
and functional air conditioning.
This particular Monte has some unusual drivetrain components
starting with its 350 cubic inch, 4-barrel V8 engine, factory rated
at 175hp. With only 55,000 miles on the clock, this 350 V8 has
plenty of "punch" left in it. Backing the small block engine is a
factory optional, heavy duty, TH400 automatic transmission
delivering the power back to the upgraded, super-strong, 12 bolt
rear end spinning 2.73 gears. Typically, these first gen Monte
Carlos are equipped with the lighter duty TH350 transmission and 10
bolt rear end - so the person who ordered this Monte wanted to make
sure the drivetrain would be as bullet-proof as possible.
Finishing off the great looks is a set of 15x7 GM rally wheels
wearing P215/75/15 white-wall radial tires that contribute to the
superb ride quality of this Luxury/Sport cruiser.
